I don't think it's fair to call BladeHQ "unscrupulous." This is a market item, and even their final price (and I note that they've now sold out their inventory, because I went back there to see if they had any left at $240/knife) was well below the MSRP for this knife. I can't see anything wrong with increasing the price for an item as long as they don't cancel existing orders at the earlier price, and if selling above the general street price is unscrupulous, then every sale from SFO is unscrupulous, since they only sell at MSRP. I guess we'd have to lump Cutlery Shoppe in with the unscrupulous, since he raised the price on the orange Manix 2 sprint? :(

Edit to add that I do think raising the price is 'bush league.' When you consider how few knives they probably had to sell in this run, and consider the absolute dollar amount that the increase gave them, then balance it against the negative customer reactions (and I agree with you that far), it's a bit of a mystery to me why they'd think it was worth raising the price, but I'm not paying the bills at BHQ.
sovereign wrote:This is not about "smoothone"'s morality. This is about how he detailed in the now deleted posts that he placed an order with "kc" while they showed as "in stock" on Monday morning, and received confirmation from "her" (Ally) that he will get another one, ahead of those who have outstanding preorders. That is the main issue I have a problem with in this particular instance.

Which points to the difference between handling sprints this way, with the way that the TiRILM4 Military was handled. Despite the delays, the exclusive run with Knifeworks was executed without a hitch. One per customer, and you know you are either in or out. Once the dust settled there were actually leftovers that gave one the option to pick up a second one, or to get your first if you missed out on the preorder. None of this "good buddy" behind the scenes deals where multiples are being pushed to preferred customers. Nor ebayers listing multiples for sale way above the preorder price that others are paying. Why does Spyderco sell these sprints to distributors who dump them on ebay? Or to unscrupulous dealers such as BladeHQ, who sold their first few at $189 and now has progressively bumped the price up to $240 in anticipation of their next shipment? So, there are at least two in this thread alone who have obtained three of these, and most of the others I have read about here and on Bladeforums claim to have obtained two. Either that, or none. C'est la vie!

So, that's my two cents. But, I imagine that those who are "in" are going to disagree with running the sprints as it was done with the TiRILM4 Millie...

If you're willing to pay MSRP can you pick up the Para 2 S90V sprint from the SFO?

I think someone mentioned buying one there? Give 'em a call. $289 MSRP.

Actually the SFO does not sell at full MSRP. I've bought a few from there and they are more than street price, but less than MSRP. My Para 2 S90V was $220, which is about 75% of MSRP.

Edit to add: I'm referring to buying in store, in person at the SFO. I'm not sure about the pricing of an online order or phone order directly from Spyderco.

Online price is full MSRP. Sometimes you get a little bonus in the package, but you are still charged full MSRP for the knife or knives you ordered. HistoricalMan's post was accurate for those of us who live too far from Golden to visit SFO in person.

In response to HistoricalMan's post. The item showed "In Stock" on our website for a few hours the other day as we were checking/receiving it in our warehouse. There is that overlap of an hour or 2 where a product may show in stock but all pieces have been spoken through pre-orders. When all product is checked in we "flip" it and allocate it to the respective orders, in the order that they were placed. We do multiple "flips" a day to keep the website up-to-date with In Stock items but we still have to wait until all of one particular item is checked in to flip. We go as fast as we can but it is still a process.

A bit of a confusing explanation but I hope it clears up the fishy feeling.

The instock notification was there because they did recieve a shipment. All I know is that I ordered first off the site, then called to confirm. He told me that the shipment was for preorders only. I dunno, I guess will know if he gets a tracking#?

No, that makes sense! Thank you for the explanation, Ally. It's appreciated. I didn't suspect any ill intent or anything, I just meant it was fishy in a sense that it was just kind of odd. I understand now!

Same applies for phone orders - full MSRP.

I was wondering what was going on when I talked to the SFO the other day and they flat out denied that anything goes out the door for less than full MSRP. I mentioned that Ben_1323 claimed to have paid around $230 out the door and the person on the phone denied that that could have happened. I told them "well, this guy must have connections, or he is a liar," and left it at that.

Now I know...

I'm going with this, until it is proven otherwise:

My understanding is that online/mail order customers pay full MSRP (they don't want to compete with their dealers), but local/walk-in customers get a discount off MSRP.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

Perhaps that makes sense for regular production, but there are no dealers with these for sale- anywhere. And there won't be.

So what's your point? That someone at SFO misspoke, by not going into the details of exceptions to a rule, possibly because they were unaware of them, possibly because none of them would have applied to someone calling in an order?

Not at this time, but there were. More or less the same thing happened with the S90V Manix 2. Other sprints have been hard to chase down as well. It's the nature of the beast, I think.

Wow. I pre-ordered my s90v sprint a couple months ago. Yet, just a couple days ago I sent a letter to KnifeCenter asking for a cancellation due to funds being lower than I expected... but Ally notified me that my order had already been shipped and couldn't be cancelled. After reading through these threads though... I'm thinking I should keep it anyway seeing as it's already a near impossibility to get the knife.

Good luck to the other pre-orders! Hope you guys get yours too.

Well I finally secured one and it'll be here Saturday. I ended up paying MSRP, but this truly is a grail for me so I'm fine with that.

I'm sure it'll be selling for close to MSRP on the secondary market come this time next year and beyond.

Based on recollection but not research, I believe your guess in the second paragraph is correct. I think it was a reasonable purchase. :)

Well I certainly hope that Knife Center can fulfill their pre-orders on this. I pretty much put all my eggs in one basket by ordering one of each of the new releases. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I will be if I cannot get one
