sorry, I didn't bring up the 'military' to discuss. I was just responding to Daniel and hope other people not to single out a country just because. I love my Chinese made Persistence, I love my Taiwanese made Sage, I love my Japanese made Caly 3, I also love my US made military. Jeez I love my Malaysian made Dell XPS that I'm using to reply this thread. I'm open mind to buy any good product from any where, and I hope other people can do the same without bringing in political discussion
Maybe your response was directed at mine, but mine was directed at another post that started the "political" discussion.

It seems that it is human nature to want the cheapest price and that is helping China. Each person decides how to spend their money. I choose to not patronize the People's Republic of China products if I have a choice. My choice has nothing to do with "just because". My issue is with the Chinese government and their human rights and trade practices.

I no problems with Taiwan. I am willing to pay a premium to avoid buying communist China's products.

What you choose to do with your money is your business. This is the last I will say regarding this issue.

That's a very fair statement and a good way to leave the discussion. Some feel a moral necessity to boycott Chinas. Some feel that economic interaction is the best method to effect change, an opinion shared by every president since Nixon, with the exception of Carter.

It's important that each of us tries to act morally according to our own conscience.

Poor Fish just put up three more at $70. Well, it's two more now, I just finally indulged in one of these seemingly wonderful knives. :)

I saw that too. I guess they weren't moving fast enough at $80, so they dropped back to $70.

Thanks, Sequimite, for posting about this and thus drawing it to my attention. I was able to snag a couple of them when they dropped backed down to the $70 level.

I don't post much, but I have read and learned from you and a lot of other folks on this forum over the last few months. Just want you to know that the sharing of your knowledge is always appreciated.

Sweet, thanks for the heads up. I was bummed that I missed out on the first batch of $64 CF Sages.

To answer the original question, I think that until the Manix 2 was released, the Sage CF was the Spyderco with the most bang for the buck. Maybe the Manix 2 cannibalized Sage CF sales and some dealers had excess inventory they needed to bring down...

Sal indicated that it was not Spyderco that was lowering the price, but retailers and/or distributors under financial stress that had to improve their cash positions. That seems to verify my original speculation.

LorenzoL offers the only theory so far as to why the Sage in particular is being targeted. Normally items are discounted in order to sell slow movers. If the object is to raise cash quickly though, it's the more popular models that are likely to be targeted. The fact that more than one retailer is slashing prices on the Sage indicates that it is a distributor that is doing the dumping.

If this is true then there should be other killer deals on popular models. Since I know little about other brands and don't typically check there prices, I wouldn't be aware of similar deals on other brands.

Just got my Sage from poor_fish! Actually it probably arrived yesterday but I was out of town. Great knife! I prefer the Sage II but this will make a nice addition to my collection and is my current EDC knife.

Like a Lum Chinese Folder for $80?

I just got my $64 Sage (my first Sage) from poor_fish. It shipped fast. I am very impressed with this knife. It's lighter than I expected. The edges of the liners are more polished than any of my other Spydies. The carbon fiber scales are less 'ground flat' than on my T-mag, and have a little bit more of the 'woven' texture. Considering the materials used, and the build quality of this knife, I almost feel guilty having gotten it at this price.

My first post was ignored I guess...LorenzoL has a theory, but the fact remains that Spyderco dealers were offered a free CF Sage for every $xxx spent on shippable product during the month of December. $64, $70 or $80 is nothing but pure profit for the dealers who ordered product in December and are spinning off the free CF Sages.

That's very interesting, I did not know this. Who offered those Sages, some distributor or Spyderco? I am asking because Sal said there had been no special deals concerning the Sage CF.
Of course, it the freebie came from Moteng, that would also explain why the Moteng Lums are starting to show up at discounted prices, too.

LorenzoL,

Dealer special of the month from Spyderco.

BTW, I did score another Lum at a great price, but I have no idea why except maybe the initial buzz of a Lum re-make has died down and dealers are sitting on slow moving inventory.

I didn't mean to ignore your post, especially from a fellow peninsula dweller.

Not knowing how much $xxx is, I took $xxx as an indication that there might be dozens more, rather than the hundreds that are showing up. Perhaps it does translate into hundreds and it is enough to have this effect.

No offense really, I guess I just felt neglected. Hard to say what influences the prices for sure though. One thing I can say, I love the price for what you're getting in return. The CF Sage is up there in my top 3 all-time favs from Spyderco.

I missed out on these, just found this thread.

Any more cheap Sage 1 from poor_fish?

I've been looking to get one and at $70, it's just right. ;)

They seem to have gone back up to 70-80$, but there was a CF Kiwi for 60$ from PoorFish.

Poorfish doesn't currently have a CF Sage for sale and sold its last one two days ago. Looks like they're out of stock for now.

To answer the original question: Spyderco offered dealers a special during the month of December. This allows us to sell some Sages at bargain prices. Once these "specials" are sold out, the price should go back to normal.
