We call it a Sage RIL (Reeve Integral Lock). We received Chris and Anne's permission to make it and call it as such. This is the Sage model created to recognize Chris Reeve and his offering to our industry. He certainly influenced the industry with his Integral Lock. (The first Sage used a Walker Linerlock to recognize Michael Walker).

We made the knife from 6Al4V titanium. that is the preferred material that Chris uses in his RIL's.

I don't think that I would compare it to a Sebenza, CRK has been refining that model for many years and it's really top drawer both in quality and in attention to detail. We are merely using his lock design.

Sorry about the right handed model Paul. If the demand is there, we can make a run of lefties.

The Native4 should be shipping shortly, the Sage RIL is a good 6 months away.

Teeth is always a question of demand. We'll watch reaction and requests.

I'm pretty sure Willey knives can put teeth on any knife. He's an old knife afi that really likes teeth.

Thanks Deacon for posting a picture of my next Spyderco. This should be nice, I haven't bought a new Spydie for a long long time.

Titanium framelocks are the way to go. Strength, beauty, and simplicity. My small regular sebenza has been my #1 pocket knife for about a year now. I carry that blade everywhere I go.

I am very excited about this knife. Its gorgous, there is no doubt in my mind that I will have to add that to my collection, i didn't buy the frist sage due to me not really like CF handles. But this one really fits the bill, Ti, FFG, S30V, i'm in heaven.

Hi Sal, Glad you like the photos.

The leaves are definitely local, gathered them that morning right on the grounds of my apartment. :) Mostly silver maple, but there might be a few sugar maple too, since we have both. The narrow red leaves are sumac, some folks consider it a pest, some an ornamental shrub. It does look pretty in the fall because it holds red lonnger than anything else, but tends to spread quickly. Darned if I know what the bright green ones are, some kind of weed most likely, they were growing on a slope that's left wild because it's too steep to mow.

I figured you'd have too much class to ever compare the Sage RIL to the Sebenza, that's just not your style. I'm equally sure that quite a few ELUs, especially "affis" will. From a purely objective view, the Small Sebenza would win on fit and finish, the Sage on price, and they'd come out almost even on materials with the Sebbie's clip giving it a slight advantage there. The only real argument will be over the relative importance of each area of comparison. Purely a guess on my part, but based on the price of the Sage WLL version, I'd put the street price for the at less than half that of the Small Sebenza, perhaps closer to one third of it. Some will appreciate that difference, and be willing to accept the trade offs required to achieve it, some will not.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I also see the Sage RIL as being very attractive to customizers. Folks are already talking about off side slab replacement, I can picture it getting bead blasted, carved, anodized, overlaid, and otherwise "molested" as well. I can see someone coming up with a "high end" replacement clip. And, of course, somebody will turn a laser loose on it.

As for a LH version, perhaps I'm seeing what I want to see, but my thinking is that knife marketing has changed considerably since the last time Spyderco produced a dedicated LH model. B&M dealers tend to think in terms of shelf space and want to focus on hot movers to make best use of it. The internet has made make niche models, especially those aimed at "under-served" audiences, more marketable, since one's audience is the world, not just a twenty mile radius. Between the lefties who'd buy 'em to use, and the collectors who'd buy them because they'd be "limited production", I don't see much of a chance of them gathering dust in the stockroom.

But yes, I am being somewhat selfish here as well. I've never felt any inclination to buy a Sebbie, even a left handed one. I have no doubt it's a totally class A piece of equipment, and have nothing but the highest respect for Chris Reeve's integrity, the design just never spoke to me. On the other hand, I find the Sage quite attractive. The Spyderhole opener, deep 50/50 choil, full flat grind, and handle shape make it a knife I'd carry and use. I'm already looking forward to the Mar/McBurnett lock version, but I would definitely be in for at least one LH Sage RIL, and probably a few.

Left-handed version would be awesome! :D

I'm a little scared of these Sages - I can see this becoming addictive. I'm afraid that if I buy one, I'm going to want every version that comes out. :o

They really do look like an excellent balance between the grippable bulk of the Manix and the pocketability of a Caly3.

For everyone's information, 98 grams is about 3.46 oz, very light for such a solid knife.

I'm kind of a lock junkie, so when I heard about this concept, I was extremely thrilled.

I didn't think about the future models until I saw this one, and it's a beauty. I think I might need to start catching up. :D I will continue dreaming about what the next one will be though...

Paul, I hope the sumac is a native one like the smooth, staghorn, winged, or poison. Unfortunately it looks like it might be the invasive type.

The invasive ones, named tree of heaven, are nasty things. They take over like crazy and are virulent as all ****. Cut one down, they shoot up even more runners everywhere!

Kudos to you for respecting the designers for thier work. Inovative features like the Emerson Wave and RIL, deserve thier due. Shiney footprints will suppress my feelings about the ability of others to do the same.

Oh man guys you may have created my idea of the perfect knife here.

See, here's my plan you just disrupted. I have a ball jar that all of my spare change is going in. When it's full, i'm going to count and roll it, and buy the nicest knife I can with it. It's a pretty big jar and is going to take a few months. I was trying to decide between a Small Regular Sebenza and a Bradley Alias II - basically, a 3" titanium framelock of exceptional design and build quality. I think you just kicked both of those off of the list - the jar is now going towards the Sage RIL. I want this knife so bad.
