When the draft was active the general term of service for draftees was 2 years. Some came home early as a result of becoming disabled and not able to complete their term of enlistment.

Started out as a drafted private. Enlisted after a year and slowly grew through the ranks. Had several deployments and lots and lots of training especially in the last ten years. Our numbers were shrinking and the tasking became extremely high. I retired in the rank of Chief Master Sergeant from the Royal Netherlands Airforce after over 36 years of service. It was demanding at times, but I received much more in return.
the saying is true... Air Force takes you places!

I have not served, but I do train officers at Ft Bragg (JFKSWCS) several times a year. I'm too old to actively serve, but I value my time with the young officers.
A big thanks to all of you who have served. I owe you my freedom.
And considering the state of freedom in our country, looks like you will need to keep fighting.

1987-1988, 15 Month military service in the German Army (one of your NATO partners

) in Eschweiler near Aachen and Westerburg in the cold Westerwald Forrest as Waelomech (weapons mechanic electrician) Leopard II (tank) and handguns (that never showed up) - it was a glorious time, I was in perfect shape and had plenty of fun with great guys. Now I´m old and dream of time travel.
