This weekend I hiked into the Jotunheimen national park to participate in a wedding up in the mountains.
Not only was it a incredibly fun and beautiful framing of the ceremony, but the timing of it made every aspect of this hike something out of the ordinary. I almost declined the invitation because the dates were not a great fit with my work schedule as I had a business trip planned this week.
But it was one of my best friends getting married, so I was open to jumping through a few hoops to get there. And getting there required going directly from my business destination and involved almost the whole plethora of public transport; train, bus and boat :)
With (more than) a few compromises I managed to pack everything I needed for the hike and the business trip into 55L hiking backpack. That’s including some unusual hiking items like laptop with accessories and a suit.
Not to mention all the unusual items I had to bring along for the business side of the trip, like tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mats, a stove etc.
Up front this all felt like a lot of hassle to go to a wedding, but once I decided to plan and go through with it, the whole thing just became a fun little challenge.
One of the compromises I reluctantly had to accept was omitting a dedicated camera, which is sad for any wedding, but especially in a picturesque setting as this. Not bringing a Spyderco was never a consideration though :)

Lake Gjende below

Because of time constraints I had to hike the trail along the lake this time, which wasn’t a big sacrifice as I’ve never hiked this trail before, whereas I’ve already hiked the somewhat famous Besseggen ridge trail (above) before.

All settled in at the wedding location

Gear spotlight/mini review. I got this Matador Laptop Base Layer laptop sleeve (partially hidden beneath my sun hoodie) in preparation for the trip, to protect my laptop during this less than typical work week. It took quite a beating and my laptop still works. It’s supposed to be waterproof, but I hardly experienced any rain so I can’t yet really tell how well it stands up to harsh weather. It also has a convenient accessory pouch (non-waterproof) that holds most of the small items I needed bring along for my business meetings, which was great as it looks a little sharper carrying just this sleeve than dragging a 55L hiking backpack along for my business meetings.

Magnetic Monday : Spyderco T-Mag from 2007, with carbon fiber scales. This is one of my oddball Spydies, it’s a slip joint with an embedded rare earth magnet to hold the blade open. It’s the first and last time I saw such a magnetic lock in a Spyderco knife, so I guess it’s sort of an experimental thing.
In terms of usage, it’s actually like the UKPK with forefinger positioning in the choil to fully prevent blade closure. The ricasso says “Golden, Colorado USA Rare Earth”

I gifted one of those to my dad. They were on close out when they got discontinued and I picked up a few because I thought they were unique. Pretty nice ergonomics, though I was always concerned the magnet might not be good to have around debit cards, phones, thumb drives etc.

It's hot! The Manix 2 lw just disappears in your shorts, great for this kind of weather.
