Amsterdam Meet 2015 report of upcoming Spyderco prototypes
Re: Amsterdam Meet 2015 report of upcoming Spyderco prototypes
Interesting that the ROC was not shown but firefly and mike draper were. All were in the 2014 catalog.
I wonder if the ROC got pushed back even farther.

I cant commit to all of them.
Just have to limit it to the "must have" list.

Spyderco 2015 Production Prototype – Gayle Bradley Bowie
To me, the Bradley Bowie looked and handled like a solid classic field knife. It has the same type of smooth radiused grip as the Southfork, but the Bradley Bowie was noticeably bigger and heavier. For a proper review of the Bradley Bowie, please see N. Brian Huegel’s post here.

Overall Length: 25,5 cm / 10.04inches
Blade Length: 13,5 cm / 5.31 inches

Wow... Bradley Folder 2 and the Bradley Bowie. Doesn't get much better than that.

Spyderco 2015 Production Prototype – Laci Szabo SzaboHawk
The Szabohawk felt like it belonged more in a toolbox than a display cabinet for fine knives. And I mean that in a good way, the Szabohawk is definitely all business. The hawk seemed very agile in the hand and ergonomic for a variety of grips. Apparently, it’s suitable for use as both an entry tool and a fighting tool if needed. The SzaboHawk’s sheath from this prototype seemed just right, solid retention but the hawk could be drawn smoothly from the sheath.

Also, the New Stretch 2 G-10 was not shown and is in the catalog. Could it mean that they're closer to release and soon we could see the real thing?swigert wrote:Interesting that the ROC was not shown but firefly and mike draper were. All were in the 2014 catalog.

K-390 on hand: Mule Team 17, Police 4 G-10, Endela (burlap micarta), Endela backup, Endura (canvas micarta), Straight Stretch (now blade-swapped with G-10 Stretch), Delica Wharncliffe, Dragonfly Wharncliffe, & Dragonfly Wharncliffe shorty mod

That was the last prototype I can share from this year's Spyderco Amsterdam Meet. Up next for me, to see how the videos of some prototypes turned out that I made from the IWA show in Germany. I hope to publish the first video tomorrow.

For what it's worth, the Stretch 2 G-10 was shown at the IWA trade show.DougC-3 wrote:Also, the New Stretch 2 G-10 was not shown and is in the catalog. It's sad to be at the end of the list, but great to have the videos still to look forward to. Thanks again for all the good work and hard work!Mr Blonde wrote:That was the last prototype I can share from this year's Spyderco Amsterdam Meet. Re: Amsterdam Meet 2015 report of upcoming Spyderco prototypes
Thanks for doing all that work to satisfy our Spydielust, Wouter! I didn't appreciate the effort this takes until I saw for myself the dizzying pace of the Amsterdam Meet. It was great to meet you and I hope it's not the last time I find myself in your fine country.
Re: Amsterdam Meet 2015 report of upcoming Spyderco prototypes
Thanks for all the effort, Sir... Once again you've done a fine job for us, and Spyderco!Mr Blonde wrote:That was the last prototype I can share from this year's Spyderco Amsterdam Meet. Re: Amsterdam Meet 2015 report of upcoming Spyderco prototypes
Seems like Byrd is taking over the entire under $100 range, and every new Spydie is going to be ultra premium stuff.
Re: Amsterdam Meet 2015 report of upcoming Spyderco prototypes
I'm not sure that's a completely accurate assessment, but I can see how one could draw that conclusion from what was shown. We were definitely shown some very high end stuff, but there is certainly a bunch of what I'd call "mid-range" knives in the works. These knives, if they sell well, could turn into "lightweight" FRN models, which have proven to be very high value for the cost.CyberKlown28 wrote:Seems like Byrd is taking over the entire under $100 range, and every new Spydie is going to be ultra premium stuff.
Although Spyderco has a very well regarded FRN line from Seki, I think they've seen demand for more FRN knives in US steels. However, you have to remember the path to creating a lightweight version: first vet the design in G10, then take the plunge to have FRN molds made. How long were the Manix and Native out before we saw FRN versions? It's not a quick process, but given the cost of a new FRN mold, you're always going to see more variety in the "high end" offerings, which pay for themselves each and every time. The FRN models only pay for themselves with volume.
But yes, if you want high end materials made here in the US, with great fit and finish, there's only so inexpensively something can be made.
