SpeedHoles wrote:^ beautiful. I just saw one of his red and black w/ a red stripe C-tek Southards on Bforums. Very interesting how the pattern is not completely uniform, I guess it just helps to show that it isn't simply a graphic. What is it, like netting molded into a rubberized material?
...and btw, what pen is that? Just curious.
Hi SH, yes the material is and feels like a very hard resin impregnated with a fine metal grid. You can faintly feel it when rubbing the scale lightly with your finger. I took some shots of the side, which picks up the light differently in each cell along the edge. Very cool stuff, I was shocked at how awesome this scale was when I opened it this morning! The pen is a Retro 1951 Atomic Tornado, you know to keep it Radioactive

. The last shot is of my two "Ketchen-ized" Southards. Drool worthy!

Beautiful, RS.
My new Southard arrives tomorrow, I think I know what wood I'll put on it, now! How durable/scratch resistant (it'll be the only thing in that pocket) would you imagine that wood to be? And, what wood is it?
Tanks!

Hi Razzle, thank you for the compliment -- Steve Ketchen is truly a master scalesmith. The wood one is desert ironwood. I EDC three knives with such scales and none have any scratches so far, but I am more on the careful side when they are in my pocket (as you said, nothing else in the pocket with it, etc). Steve uses a variety of great hardwoods, you should definitely peruse his custom scales thread over on Blade Forums. Can't recommend working with Steve enough! There are several other great scale makers out there too on BF, lots of variety! Cheers, Radioactive :)

Oh, I already knew I'd go with Steve, as he lives right down the hill from me. Thought that was burled maple or something......being an Arizona native, I want Arizona ironwood on my Gayle Bradley and Southard!
Did you remove the lanyard tubes on your Southards, or just cover 'em up with the scales?

Co-worker of mine just got back from a 3 week Costa Rica trip and his first day back at work involved a monopole troubleshoot. It was -12C (~ 10F) which by itself isn't very cold, but the wind was fairly strong and very chilly and is always worse as you get higher above the ground. You could say he had a slightly "Tuff" first day back lol. I also had my Spyderhawk with me but didn't manage a picture of it.
