Re: Clipless Carry - Who dares ?
Just curious, what kind of pants do people wear that causes them to lose a knife without a clip? I wear jeans all the time and NOTHING falls out of my pockets, even a flash drive or a SAK. I use a clip for ease of access.

I mostly wear jeans too, but on occassions I have to wear slacks. Uhhg! Which are generally loose fitting lightweight material. Some slacks I've owned, the pocket would angle downward when sitting, so anything in the pocket would slide out. (hate pants like that) Also have some shorts with small mesh pockets that are absolutely worthless. Nothing without a clip stays in those pockets. I much prefer jeans and cargo pants/shorts just for knife carrying purposes, lolAladinsane wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 7:41 amJust curious, what kind of pants do people wear that causes them to lose a knife without a clip? Mostly out of safety / necessity .
Let me explaine . Years ago I took a clad blade HAP40 Delica and removed the upper portion of the blade ; picture in your mind a very wide fingernail file . No taper to the point on the spine / pretty much spine is parallel to the edge.
Why ? This was an easy way to get a very thin blade and still be clad "for strength".
Plus
I wanted to fool around with cutting most of the Spydie hole away and leaving just enough to be able to wave the blade open by hooking it on the edge of my pocket AND at the same time have enough hook left there to open the knife with my thumb .
I succeeded . . .
but
NO BODY DO THIS ! ! ! this knife is too dangerous to carry clipped to pocket !
the problem being it pretty much ALWAYS opens when drawing it even when you don't want it to . It will snag and open at least half way.
NOT GOOD !
I have taken to carrying it loose in pocket and when drawing it I can wrap my fingers around the whole knife and take it out of my pocket safely closed
or
make a conscious decision to wave it open when I want to do that .
It fits in a pocket slip and often I just carry it that way to keep it cleaner / safer .
HA HA ha I guess I haven't learned my lesson because the danged Para 3s that I have turned into box knives by cutting the blade shorter (basically a very short Wharncliffe with the full Spydie hole left whole . . . pops a little way open when I just try to draw them unopened from my pocket .
Oh well ; lesson learned . I pretty much just take it out of my multi pocket knife wallet at work and leave it on the bench and use it that way .
I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS KNIFE THOUGH !
Feels so good in use / so useful for my work !

I learned my leason about that about twenty years ago . It was my day off , I was wearing some nice Linen shorts , Timber Land moccasins , a wool Driving Cap . . . the whole shhhhssssmmmear !Pacu0420 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 7:46 pmI mostly wear jeans too, but on occassions I have to wear slacks. Remember when people used to put on nice clothes on a day off to go to town rather than dress down ?
I do.
As I was getting out of . . . The MG . . . (relevant because it was so low to the ground I could reach down and put my hand on the ground ; would high center on a speed bump). . . my very much prized , tiny , Western Brand Three Blade Stockman fell out of my pocket into the parking lot . I wasn't in the store but a few minutes when I noticed I couldn't feel it in my pocket .
Went right back out to look for it but somebody had picked it up .
That loss still hurts !
Such a cool little knife !
The people in The Other Forum in a Traditionals thread taught me to put a bandana or good size hankie in the pocket above the knife .
Ya those shorts were pretty loose fitting and I was running marathons back then so there wasn't much of me there to draw the top of the pocket closed even If I had been wearing jeans which I did during the day as a welder . Black ones.
A good size pocket slip helps keep a little knife from going on an unscheduled excursion too .

I did !
I carried the same Buck Esquire 501 for two decades, still have it, loved it because it would lock open.
The blade has been resharpened so much it is ~3/4 it original size.
Now I only carry EDC locking folders with clips.

With khakis and slacks I can see knives falling out when you sit (slash pockets)
