Yes, typically if it's a hot sprint/exclusive that limit you to 1 or 2 max, they will sell out very quickly to the ebay flippers. Harder to get, so they raise the prices and hope people will bite. Definitely takes the fun out of the hobby for those that really want the knives and don't have instant accessMage7 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 30, 2025 7:05 pmIs that true for releases that have been limited quantities per customer too?TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Mon Dec 29, 2025 7:41 pmThe catch with that is, when it drops and if it's highly sought after and a limited run...it will sell out before you get your email. I don't think the game is quite like it was a few years back, so SHOULD last longer than that, though you never know I guess.
I kind of want to wait for a DLC version too, but dunno how long "soon after" is and it feels like more of a gamble to wait.

Shoot I was only thinking about the fact that Rex 121 would patina... I didn't even think about the color combination. I am also a fan of orange and black...silver & black wrote: ↑Tue Dec 30, 2025 7:20 pmYea.... I'm a fan of raw/satin finshed blades.... but the DLC in black with the orange would be killer. I'm in Ohio in a small city called Massillon. We are the "world famous" Tigers, so....... I would gravitate to the orange and black version.Mage7 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 30, 2025 7:05 pmIs that true for releases that have been limited quantities per customer too?TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Mon Dec 29, 2025 7:41 pmThe catch with that is, when it drops and if it's highly sought after and a limited run...it will sell out before you get your email. Yeah, that's kinda what I was worried about. I was hoping the limit would prevent that, but I guess it's not exactly like finding enough people to buy two just to sell one for 2x the price and basically get a free one.... Not that I haven't thought about doing that, but I have resisted the temptation so far.TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Tue Dec 30, 2025 7:23 pmYes, typically if it's a hot sprint/exclusive that limit you to 1 or 2 max, they will sell out very quickly to the ebay flippers. Actually, not to toot my own horn, but I have at times done a catch and release on these runs. I will usually sell them to someone on the secondary market for the regular price... It's not entirely altruistic anyway since it gives me a chance to sample things without much concern, but also it keeps them out of the hands of scalpers.
Unfortunately for this one, I won't have the funds to get two, and I am definitely keeping one for myself. I've never been a huge fan of the PM2 but I liked it enough that it was a hard choice to give up the 15V one I got, but I love Wharncliffes and have a good feeling about Rex 121--unless it's as impossible to get a fine edge on as the HIC Mule was.

I expect to lose out on this release. If I was home on my PC, I could see me getting this, b ut being at work on my "phone"..... i just see it going bad. I'll be at the mercy of the flippers..... and I absolutely have to have this release, as the PM2 is my favorite Spyderco.
Re: Jeff Loffer from Cutlery Shoppe the new PM2 in REX 121
Mage,
Don't kid yourself man, you can hone a razor edge on Rex121 and that HIC too. I am about halfway on my HIC in re-profiling it to 15 dps. My HIC was far from the norm when I got mine and it's been a learning lesson, no lessons lol.
I had it razor sharp but at a dps that just doesn't work for a blade like that. This and Rex121 is a cutting blade, you don't use these to pry with. You park them at 15 dps they will hone and polish out just like a razor.
I do have a killer Sage5 in the nice G10 that is Orange and it's Rex121 blade is seriously a razor... it's at 15 dps. So yes it's some work to hone the blade to a 15 dps, but once profiled there it will reward you. My HIC will to, I just have not got the profile established on it yet lol...

I would try to ask someone to grab it for you. Maybe someone that is already on a PC at work or something. Bribe them with a six pack... Or maybe a case if you're gonna be buying a $250 knifesilver & black wrote: ↑Tue Dec 30, 2025 7:55 pmI expect to lose out on this release. Well, I'm exaggerating with "impossible" but for me the difficulty wasn't actually grinding, but finishing the edge. I just couldn't get it hair-shaving, let alone hair whittling like I would normally get any steel. I went down a rabbit hole reading about people having to use diamond compounds and what not, and I just didn't want to buy more sharpening gear just to get the HIC razor sharp.Jeb wrote: ↑Tue Dec 30, 2025 8:19 pmMage,

My hope would be that the Rex 121 still being a steel wouldn't have the same issue with microchipping and be able to reach the sharpness I want on the equipment I have. My finest diamond hones are an Atoma 1200, a DMT EF and some 5 micron paste. My stance is that if I can't get a hair shaving sharp edge on that equipment, then I don't want that blade material.
Knowing how hard and brittle Rex121 is gives me pause, but it's still steel. It can't be as chippy as ceramic... I hope lol. I didn't have a problem with Maxamet though so I have confidence in that hope too.

Re: Jeff Loffer from Cutlery Shoppe the new PM2 in REX 121
that should be more than enough. I've been using a DMT fine since about 2006 and I haven't found a knife that it's incapable of getting shaving sharp. These days I can get a clean shave off my DMT coarse just fine too. Now I haven't tried Rex121 but I have done S110V, K390, Rex45 etc. on those without any issues.
Re: Jeff Loffer from Cutlery Shoppe the new PM2 in REX 121
I sharpen my knives free hand on diamond plates.
REX 121 is difficult to sharpen, not impossible, just challenging for me.
I have no issues with any other steel type, like Maxamet, K-390 or M398, but REX 121 is a lot of work.
I have not succeeded in sharpening my Mule HIC to a point where I am satisfied yet...

Yep, 7-8 min from what I saw. Did not get one, very cool looking, feeling just fine however.
I would have been far more tempted with a PM2 wharnie in K390 at 65HRC

I did not try to get one. I was on the fence, but ultimately decided to pass on this one. I'll probably regret it later.
On the bright side, XHP Mili 2 exclusives are still available.

I’ve been wanting to try a wharnie in the pm2 so I jumped on the opportunity to also try rex121.

Those that missed out or feel regret will get a second chance with the next two options with the new coating, which while I’m not usually a ‘coating’ guy, am more interested in due to the fact it is the new coating, and makes sense with the tool steel nature of the Rex steels.
Still will probably sit it out, but very happy for all who jumped in - its a cool knife!

Was very tempted but I decided to pass, I'm just not crazy about the PM2 anymore, going to direct these funds to the S90V Bodacious instead.

Yeah the coated ones are what I have my sights set on. I was surprised to see the wharnie sell out quicker than the normal version. It was a good demonstration of how quick I'll need to be.Red Leader wrote: ↑Mon Jan 05, 2026 10:24 amThose that missed out or feel regret will get a second chance with the next two options with the new coating, which while I’m not usually a ‘coating’ guy, am more interested in due to the fact it is the new coating, and makes sense with the tool steel nature of the Rex steels.
