Since I am given a vote, I'd say no name engraved. PARA-MILITARY seems to overpower the smaller blade. How it sits in my hand will have much more effect on my purchase decision than engraving.

Sal,
My somewhat OT vote. I'd like to see the knife's name (and/or Model Number) engraved on the tang with "the other Spyderco stuff".

Why not just engrave some and not engrave others? I personally would prefer no engraving due to the aesthetics of the knife.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks Sal for the opportunity for input in a new model. I can't wait to get my hands on the new Para, regardless of engraving or not, though I would lean towards no name on the blade.Ever thought about a small Spyderco emblem there instead? Thanks for a Great product!!

I like the name on the blade but not that large. If it can't be done on the spine or smaller like the engraveing on the forum Native 3 I would have to vote no engraveing.
How about egraveing it on the tang with the other info
front of tang
Spyderco
CPM S30V
Back of tang
Para-Military
Golden,CO. USA Earth
Needs the name on it somewhere, engraved small maybe on the clip

WHAT!!!
The Viking leaves for a couple of days and this is what happens.... So no name on the blade is the political right way to go now ? The Millie has always had the name ingraved on it, that is how a Millie looks. The para should get the same treatment!! So the name is wrong ? Would it be better with a "cool" name like "The Gungabunniefriend" ? As Java stated, IT´S THE PARAMILITARY even if it doesn´t read that on the blade!!!

In light of all these responses, I'd like to offer an apology to those who were offended by the tone of my original post. I'm glad to see the issue is taken seriously, and that Sal is willing to take inuput on this. Thanks.
And yes, if you offer a model with no engraving, I will definitely buy one!

My vote is not for no name - but for a dfferent execution. Not because of pc, but simply because as it is shown on the proto-type at least - it doesn't seem to please the eye.
Perhaps smaller text in relation to the blade size, or as has already been suggested, on the tang.

Guest,
We're a pretty friendly group here and your concern was not really out of line at all. Sal is very responsive to the desires of the ELUs. The discussion that followed from your original post was informative in many aspects and the disagreement was for the most part cordial. I understand your concern but I do not share you view in its entirety. I brought up the paramilitary units recently because I served as a part-time contract security police officer when I was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base. We were clearly defined in our contract as a paramilitary force with powers to detain, arrest, and use deadly force. Units like this are also members of the SAR community and I believe the Paramilitary name honors them as well. Please hang around and continue to contribute. Diversity helps us to better foster lively discussion and better understanding. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Having the name on the tang (or the clip) sounds fine. It just looks a little overpowering on the blade, at least with the font size on the prototype.

I've changed my stance a bit. Looking at the Military next to the Paramilitary, it seems like something is missing when the Para has no engraving. I'd like to see PARA-MILITARY engraved, but in a much smaller font; or just PARA, in a slightly smaller font than on the proto. I've done two (bad) mock-ups to illustrate:

Dear All,
I still think Guest has a valid point. The name can, and will, be brought up in court to try to portray a defendant as some kind of tough, vigilante type guy looking for trouble. I do agree that ParaMilitary has bad connotations in lots of places and minds. Why do you suppose so many good cops get in trouble for "abusing" suspects? Some crook belts a cop a few times, and when he is cuffed the cop bounces his head off the bonnet of a car. Which we've seen captured on video tape, by the way. Did the guy deserve it? Yes - he'd punched the poor LEO a few times, but the resulting footage went all over the world. Who needs that sort of agravation? Fortunately Spyderco does offer knives with all sorts of non-tactical names, as mentioned. Personally, here in Australia, it is actually illegal to carry a weapon for the purpose of self-defense. I often worry that my Endura is going to get confiscated and I'll end up on a felony charge. It could happen!
Stay safe all, Neophyte.

In the same way that Spyderco give us a PE/SE choice on most models, could a named and anonymous model both be made available? Having just bought an S30V Military I don't object to the etched name but as a Law teacher in England it will only rarely leave the house. The same will go for the Paramilitary when it arrives.

I will say that I have decided to reduce the size or eliminate the engraved name on the blade. You guys can be a pain in the A$$, but you do make some very valid points, only a fool would ingore.

I'd like to see an etched bug with Para-Military circling it in small letters. This would give many of us the bug we want and minimize the aggressive impact of the name.
