The NC LW is a very capable knife beyond SD. The tip is much stronger than it seems, and to my surprise, it excels at processing wood (carving/whittling included). The only brittle thing about this knife is the apex of BD1N under lateral force. I expect this to be a very viable option for a folding fishing knife, too.
My only real negative that I've found about this knife is the lack of overall refinement when compared to my experiences in the N5 LW. My NC LW took time to "break in", and is now smooth operating, but it just doesn't have the level of tight tolerance that any N5 LW has/had. Kind of reminds me of the initial run of problems that the S2XL LW had upon release. I think this will get better over additional production runs of this knife, but it is quite rough as it is for being $150+ for what it is now.
Although I own and love my Native Chief (original G10 and S30V version only), TBH, I don't carry it as much as I'd hoped I would because of the super-narrow and fine tip. Which sounds silly on my part, as I should have known, right?
I personally wouldn't use the NC as a whittling knife. Too long, and IMO, not necessarily an ideal shape for that. For that, I'd more likely use a knife with a small coping blade. Or even a small spear point blade.
Haha, what? It's an enormous knife with a fragile tip. Opposite of what you want for whittling.
Ahhhhhhhh....please forgive me. I think the last time that I whittled something I was around 8yrs old in Cub Scouts.
We shall see!!!! I may be the guy with 3 fingers on my left hand.
A good thing about whittling with the Native Chief on the front porch is that doorbell ringing salesmen may stay off the property if they see you sitting there with a Native Chief. If that does not work I have a Junglass!
