Any updates on the Stok? Is anyone super excited about it after having used it for a while?

I stumbled across an article interview with the designer, and I’ll admit that hearing the intent and the design philosophy behind it made me more likely to try one or both eventually. Notably he designed them to be used as a complementary pair, rather than them just being two different blade options. They make a lot more sense to my brain now. 🙂

Thanks for that designer link. I liked his thoughts at the end. Magnacut micarta would be an instant buy for me.

I've looked at it a couple of times. But it isn't what I need or want in a fixed blade. I'm sure it's great for certain applications but I mainly use fixed blades for outdoor activities.

I'm still holding out hope for a Salt Version of the TEMPERANCE 1 model along with SE & PE both. But if they ever made it available with TEETH that might change my mind.

Small fixed blades are my favourite type of knife, Spyderco are my favourite knife maker…

…Yet The Stok has absolutely zero interest to me whatsoever. Even the price point isn’t appealing. It’s a big no thanks from me.

I’ve just had delivered a Peltonen M23 cub, that’s the same overall size a the Stok.

Comfortable full size handle, incredibly sharp 2.5 inch cutting edge out of 80crv2 @ a stated 62 HRC. Looks like it could do some work no trouble. Well fitting kydex sheath too, I believe there’s a leather option though.

Reasonably priced - less than the Stok costs (here at least).

It seem small fixed blades are becoming quite popular, and as such there is an subsequent boom in supply.
I have an affinity for small fixed blades (and small knives in general), so I'm happy about this development, and there are so, so many interesting designs showing up, I can't even keep up. But ever since I got "burned" on the Subway Bowie, which was just way smaller than I realized, I've become a bit shy with regards to trying my luck on new small fixed blades.
In this booming marketplace of interesting designs and materials, the Stoks are ones where the specs and visuals doesn't really appeal much to me on paper, but with the less than neutral handle design I'm open to the possibility my opinion could change very quickly if I had a chance to hold one in hand.

With current pricing from K&T a Stok would be approx. USD 152 before it's ready for pickup at PO. That's way above my pain threshold of what I'm willing to invest just to validate the ergonomics on a 8Cr, Chinese fixed blade.

I was gifted one this past Christmas, I opened it up, looked at it, smiled big and said thank you. Found it in my toolbox this past week, I had completely forgotten about it, don’t care much for it…at all, I certainly wouldn’t have bought it for myself.

I’ve never said this about a Spyderco before!

The pictures don’t do the Stok knife justice. I checked one out when I dropped by Blade HQ and they looked pretty nice. Didn’t get one because of the steel type. Ended up finding a fixed blade in CPM-10V and got that.

The siren call of a low price on ebay pulled me in.
The image of the Stok Bowie overpowered the specifications.
When it arrived, I was shocked by how small it was.
Still struggling to figure out what to use it for.

Okay.
Nothing wrong with the precision sized Stok Bowie.

Tried some pocket carry without the clip
but that was not working.

I've been wearing it a couple of days
with the clip in the position it was shipped.
Vertical strong side belt carry.

Still have not used it to cut anything
but the charming little thing is growing on me.

I have the drop point version. I have small hands and even my hands were too big to be able to comfortably hold the knife. I made "thicker" contoured scales to counter that a bit. It's better now but it is more linked to the length of the real estate available for the hand than anything, IMO.

Cuts pretty well, I just don't care much for how fast it scratches, like the Bow river. Overall I like it, but I honestly go for a Mule or the Sprig 99% of the time !

Yes, absolutely. A small blade
with a large comfortable handle
could be a very useful knife.

In my mind I quickly dismissed this model after its reveal and haven't really looked into it after that.
But.. while not a big priority, In the back of my head I'm always searching for that "perfect" EDC fixed blade that has just the right amount of blade and handle/grip area. Just enough length to get all my fingers on the knife and no excess handle to poke me or announce its presence to the surroundings. In other words, I'll rather have a 3.8 finger grip than a 4.2 finger grip. But these things are very hard to judge from images and spec sheets.
I have small hands as well, and didn't initially consider that there was a risk of getting a handle that was too short. And that's how I greatly miscalculated the size of the Subway Bowie. Way too small even for me :)

I think we might have quite comparable hand size, so if you don't mind posing as a hand model with the Stok :) it could maybe serve to bring the Stok back on the table for me.

Medium size gloves fit me well.
Target grid is one inch squares.

Quarter is to provide some scale.
Image

Just to show how it lies in the hand.
Image

Philippine grip thumb on top of spine.
Image

It has a bit of a thumb choil for poking.
Image

A sabre grind like this one or a hollow grind
and a swedge like the one on this clip point
are eye candy for me
but I am beginning to warm up
to the practicality of a slicey flat grind.
Specially in the kitchen.

If you are wondering about the scattered bullet holes,
this target was used for sighting in at 100 meters
and adjusted to get on target.
That's my alibi and I am sticking with it.

Thanks Mac! The size does appear to be just about right for what I'm after. I wear size large in gloves, but that's to fit my long fingers. My palms/grip are quite slender though.

PS! You shouldn't have said anything anything about those bullet holes, I figured that had to be your 1000 yard target :winking-tongue

After reading my answer back, I think I chose the wrong word : The length of the handle is ok, but it's not tall, so it makes me "squeeze" my hand in an uncomfortable way to hold it the way I like to hold almost if not all of my Spydercos? It doesn't show well but my index is bent in a way that isn't fun, especially for an extended amount of time.

Image

As far as holding it "hammer grip" or pinching on the flat of my scales, it's good enough :winking-tongue I tried to prepare food with it a couple of times though and even if it's not the right tool for the job, I have many folders that aren't suited for it too but with which I have a better time doing so.

Image

Image

As for the thickness, the flat near the ricasso are as thick as the G10 factory scales (had to do that so that the kydex fits perfectly) and the reste is around double the thickness, nicely rounded.

Nice work with those scales, @Ramonade !
And thanks for taking on the modeling assignment despite very poor compensation :)

Now I'm back to thinking this knife is probably not the right one for me. It could be, but I don't think I have time to chase all the probably-not's-that-could-be out there.
