Well first you have to know what to search for. I was blinded by the light seeing the Kopa for the first time when a member posted a pic. I would not have known to search for that one if I didn't see it, then ask what model it is of the poster. I am going to guess most newer members don't peruse through the annals of this great forum. Getting something fresh to see and discuss can spark some new interest.

I assume the Spyderco 2023 Retail Price Guide (Volume 1) and any changes to the MAP Discount Rate will be announced no later than Friday, December 30, 2022?

Just wait until the next MAP holiday. I spent about $2,000 this Black Friday to hold me over to the next one lol. I didn't buy a single knife at MAP before then, no offense.

Spyderco isn't the only one to do this. Pretty sure Benchmade did it last year, and I just got an email from Knifecenter that says the following brands' prices will increase in January 2023:

ZT
Spyderco
Buck
Kershaw
Leatherman
CRKT
Boker

What the market will allow will be the final arbiter. Given how close many Spyderco knives are edging toward custom and semi-custom prices, slow sells could change the entire dynamic.

That crazy low price on the teal S30V Delica could become more common if dealers are sitting on too much inventory.

From talking with a few people somewhat close to the knife industry (not close to Spyderco, just overall) we may already be seeing some signs of this, or will shortly.

When the firearms market bottomed out there were insane rebates and price drops, regardless of what the inputs cost.

Quite probable.

Subvert started with a street price of $305.50 back in 2019, $329.00 in 2020 and $378.35 in 2022.

That’s a lot for a titanium liner lock with S30V & G-10.

During the MAP Holiday they were going for around $300.

I'm no expert, but it seems to me that when the price is raised, then less product is sold. So in the long run, profits don't go up because of decreased sales. I could be wrong though

I have a somewhat different perspective on price increases. I expect them, but I also expect quality to go up similarly. Back in the day when I was buying Caly 3s like they were candy, I'd turn a blind eye toward lock rock, which was common. And any steel they were made of, was fine with me.

That's not today's reality. When the new Caly FRNs become available at...whatever price they become available...I'll buy, but if there's appreciable lock rock, noticeably uneven grind, etc, it's going back. If it's available only in VG-10, probably won't buy at all.

So there's two sides to the coin of price increases. I'll pay more, but I expect to get more in return. As the saying goes, "There is no free lunch."

I think the MAP holiday was probably a sign of slow sales. I don't think it was a "gift" for us. I think it was a necessity for retailers.

In the pecking order the end user is last:

1. Spyderco
2. Distributors & Dealers
3. End Users

Interesting perspective. I suspect you are correct...

It worked too. I jumped on quite a few great deals. On the flipside, I am saturated with new (and old) knives, so I'm not likely going to buy anything for months, or even until the next MAP holiday or super discount.

it has to be true for certain models. the wharncliffe endura was only $39.99. the only way that happens is if it's not selling and they need to get rid of some stock. once they sold a certain number, it wasn't marked out of stock, but the price went back to normal. they obviously needed to clear some out.

Exactly one of the events I was alluding to. I agree completely and think we may soon see more of these.

What we are dealing with right now is not so much "inflation" in general but rather the disastrous effects of what where in my opinion meaningless COVID lockdowns, "meaningless" because they did nothing to stop the spread, and the resultant grossly inflationary monetary policy of central banks to prop up the collapsed economy due to the lockdowns. Trillions of fake liquidity were pumped into the system. The current housing crisis is 100% caused by COVID monetary policy, Powell has admitted this, belatedly. I don't mean to get "political" but this stuff does inevitably affect prices.

I suppose inflation may increase 2023 prices but at the same time the Fed has been tightening monetary policy this whole year and will do so into 2024. This sucks the "value" out of assets and places it back into the currency, our beloved knives being an asset for example. So, a "recession" is inevitable as we correct back to economic reality. There's just been so many insane bubbles since 2008 when the QE started. Bitcoin should have been a canary in the coal mine for everyone.

At the same time the war in Ukraine and our belligerence towards China, plus China's obsessive and probably doomed focus on "Zero COVID" will further stagnate supply chains and consequentially help entrench "real" inflation on top of what the Fed is doing. However, demand is collapsed because all this. The net result (stagflation) is a recipe for another MAP holiday next Black Friday. We are in stagflation right now. That's why prices are so high but no one can afford anything.

I remember when I was sitting on the sidelines as the MAP was rolling and guys defending it were like "well, you don't need these knives, they're a luxury." Yes, indeed they are. Supply and Demand cuts both ways.

Will the price increase also be applied to discontinued models? Want to acquire something, but would prefer not to spend any more this year.

People cry blues when company increases prices. A knife is item, you want. but in most case you do not need if you already have knife.


Do you cry blue at grocery store went milk went from $1.15/Half-gallon to over $2.00. Gas went from $2.00 to $5.00/gallon. Again why no boo boo.
