I don't hear anyone saying either is their favorite steel.

... and why isn’t there a ZDP 189 wharnie Delica? :(

I’m for ZDP. It’s unique.
I think it was said it’s coming.

I sure missed that, if it was. I want one.

Well, you are dealing with knife nerds here. Some have several steel favorites.

ZDP-189 is one of my favorite steels in the Spyderco line.

What I like is a premium steel that I can get to a hair whittling edge using only my Sharpmaker medium, fine & ultrafine stones, and a 1 micron diamond loaded strop. I tried to do this with ZDP-189, but just couldn't seem to. If I need to use diamond rods or stones, I'd rather find another steel.

So, if you could get any steel you wanted on a Japan manufactured Spyderco, which would it be?

Probably LC200N. Cruwear or CTS-XHP would also be great.

There’s plenty of offerings in Hap40, I would be a resounding no on this one. Not to mention Hap40 sprints are usually around the longest with some still being available from 2017. I believe this is due to the stainless cladding and everyone knowing that after 10 seconds of use it looks horrible. Not really user knives.

That's how different we all are (luckily so ;)) !

Exactly what you describe IS one of the things that make cladded HAP 40 blades user knives for me personally: I actually like the used, scratched up look of the soft "cladding steel" and how it gives every HAP 40 knife an unique look.. a user should look used for me.

Furthermore, the cladding should enhance rust proofness, toughness and lateral stability, which makes the HAP 40 Spydies even more knives to be really used...

Knives can't be users if the blade gets scratched? lol.

Patina and scratches are part of the charm.

Why not?

I hope scratches dont keep you from using a knife.

I'm surprised you couldn't get ZDP super sharp. I have found it to be easier to get super sharp than many other steels (s110v, Maxamet) that I use and sharpen. I have a ZDP dragonfly that I basically just keep stropping back to super sharpness over and over.

Exactly. For example with coated blades (like my Esee Laser Strike) I only begin to really like them when the coating is quite worn and scratched up. Makes it more MY knife somehow...

Consider the heat treat. The HAP40 Spyderco is receiving (despite being great) is nothing like their REX45 in regard to heat treat despite being virtually chemically identical.
What difference have you noticed?

Extra wear resistance through hardness with a negligible difference in toughness. Possibly better overall stability in my limited experience as well.

Ditto. Thats my experience as well (apart from the Maxamet, which I dont have).
My British racing green ZDP189 DF gets sharp (and stays sharp for a long time) with a minimum of effort.

I guess, in a way, HAP40 is what I hoped ZDP-189 would be, but wasn’t, for me personally.

I'd take a ukpk or urban in zdp - would like to have a legal carry option that holds a fine edge well.

Spydercos zdp offerings are such a bargain

I’ve never had an issue with zdp, m4, 10v, d2 or any of the carbon steels rusting. A light coat of starrett mineral oil and they’re good to go. A knife is a tool to me though and just like anything you have to take care of it.

Just opening hap40 clad in that soft stainless runs gauling radially along the pivot area and feels gritty to me. If I’m alone in the dislike for soft stainless clad knives oh well. Reminds me of the people who pull an old car out of a barn and leave the dust and grime on it and show it. To each their own.

I feel a knife shouldn’t be tore up from cutting up boxes within the first 5 minutes. Just my opinion of course. I hope it hasn’t offended you.
