COOL! you got one of the ORIGINAL Voyagers! I will admit it: I do not like the stone wash. I like the older version Voyagers with the satin finish.

Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
A question for you all: A person asks what is the main performance difference between the AUS 8 steel Cold Steel uses and the BD1?
Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
I kind of like the stonewash finish. Something different, without making the blade very susceptible to rust like a bead blast finish does.SpyderEdgeForever wrote:COOL! you got one of the ORIGINAL Voyagers! In my opinion CTSBD1 seems harder than the AUS8 I've used, and holds an edge a little better. They seem very similar otherwise.SpyderEdgeForever wrote:A question for you all: A person asks what is the main performance difference between the AUS 8 steel Cold Steel uses and the BD1?

Did you get the AUS8 or BD1 model? They look very similar
I like the multiple grips it offers as well as the light weight for the size

the lock is usually stiff at first and I sand the grivory underneath the clip and bend it just a tiny bit

I have one in CTS-BD1 and have had 2 in AUS8, the newer steel is definitely more corrosion resistant (I patina'd a few AUS8 Cold Steels, even the non-bead blasted ones and including the 2 Voyagers on hotter months)

And yes the Zip.Tie(s) ae ridiculous but work each and every time for smooth one handed deployment without having to be looking at such a big blade, like when you're holding some twigs or grabbing thorns

I went with CTSBD1. I did find some AUS8 models on clearance so I may pick up a large version as well.
I'm going to try the zip tie out. This knife really made me realize how much I prefer the hole to thumb studs....been a long time since I've used thumb studs at all.
Already sanded under the clip some but I think it needs a little more work. That clip grips hard!
Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
Peacent, that Voyager has a lot of blade width. Have you ever considered grinding a wave hook into the blade instead of using the zip ties? It is both easier to clean and a cleaner look. It’s also easier to do than creating a Spyderhole.

Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
0170-6C and 50100B are the same steel. 50100B is the actual name of the steel. A great performer and a great many think that Carbon V is 50100B, but Cold Steel has never admitted this. It performs a bit better than 1095, in my experience. There are a lot of similarities between 50100B and 01 and I think Cold Steel has gone to 01 to get that same performance that they lost when their source of 50100B dried up.shunsui wrote:Doc Dan wrote:...I also like the Carbon V. It's a two page thread. :D

Dunno that I'll try to add a spyderhole, but I do plan on doing something like this:Bill1170 wrote:Peacent, that Voyager has a lot of blade width. Figure I might be able to shed some weight this way.
Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
Voyager XL has enough mass that a wave isn’t needed. Just do a kinetic opening once the knife clears pocket. I also think it’s less awkward than waving it.
The easiest way to create hook is to lower the spine in front of the thumbstud hole, cutting into the hole, IMO. Or if thumbstud is still installed, the wave can be in front if it.
Sample from my older mod:

I don’t have these anymore and prefer Spydiehole controlled opening nowadays.

Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
I have an Endura 4 and a Pacific Salt, both of which I waved by lowering the spine and creating a hook in front of the (still intact) Spyderhole. The Endura is FFG, so it cuts better due to reduced thickness at the spine. The Pacific Salt waves open easier because the saber ground blade is still weighty relative to the blade on the Endura. Both of these knives can be opened via the hole or via the hook. It comes down to how I grasp it as I withdraw it from my pocket.
Those Voyagers benefit from some weight loss.

Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
So the other night I hiked up a mountain well past sunset, and setup my hammock in the dark. I was using my XL Voyager to do some light clearing, getting some inconveniently placed briars out of the way. Felt something on one of the swings that didn't feel right....looked down and realized I whacked a rock I hadn't seen.
The edge took it pretty well. I guess it's good it still had the factory edge. I always reprofile knives to much thinner than the factory edges are, and I'm sure the damage would have been worse.

Chops very nicely for a folder as long as you avoid rocks :D

Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
Having exactly same knife, I just realized your hand is so huge. My pinky rests on the flat of the handle before the two hollow curves at the back, using same grip! Or I need one additional finger to cover same handle space as you!Vivi wrote:

I guess the Tanto should have more mass for chopping. The balance is a bit forward (just behind pivot). Glad the damage isn’t that bad.

Re: So I bought my first Cold Steel knife.
Those little dings happen all the time on my knives when I use them outdoors, setting up camp or clearing a space. They are easy to get out.
Does that Voyager have steel liners or is it one of the ones without? I prefer the steel liners as the knives without tend to flex quite a bit.
