I don't know if this is a Golden Mule or a Taiwan Mule.
Edit: Now we need D2 (ingot) and D2 (CPM) Mules for comparison!
I think the thin grind was well received. If I remember correctly the edge angle was different on the S110v mules. Sal planned to tell the Taiwan plant to return to a lower angle.

In case anyone else was wondering what the difference is between spray forming and powder metallurgy, the Wikipedia article is pretty informative. It seems to be taken almost entirely from a doctoral thesis, but it's still pretty thorough. It seems pretty similar to PM as I understand it, with the main advantage appearing to be cost. Anyone have any further insight on how this might be an improvement over, say, CPM D2? Other than the small difference in chemistry, of course.

I ordered your CF for the last Mule and am very happy with the quality, look, and feel. The pictures on your web site don't show enough detail for me to choose my next set. Do you have any hi-res photos available for your current handles? It would also be nice if you posted large pictures of the paperstone and other new offerings coming in the future.

Prices vary from one mule to another, this one seems to be somewhere in the middle of the most recent prices.

I just want to let you know that over the last year and a half or so, I have gone to the spydiewiki for information many times. It's great to be able to get info so quickly and easily and I really appreciate the effort that you, and anybody else involved, have taken to make this possible. Thanks.

I'm feeling a very tepid response to this mule team and the steel in general and that is kind of dissappointing to me (the response, not the steel). Looking back at the history and purpose of the mule team series it is intended to try new untested steels out in a comparable platform for afi's and steel junkies to use and test. This is not intended to provide a way for us all to get the best uber steel at the cheapest price (it just kinda worked out that way with the K390 and S110v models). Heck, they even did a CRMOV mule when they were venturing into the chinese market. While I love these super steels and am grateful to have had a chance to get them at that price, I think this version is getting back to the roots of the program. Relatively unknown, untested steel with a unique process. I for one am excited for this one and I will take one user just like the last two batches. Thanks Sal for such and awesome program and I will continue to support this as long as you keep releasing new and interesting steels.

Well said, and I agree with your thoughts about this steel getting back to the roots of the program.

I admit, I was a little unsure of this one. At first I thought "oh great, just another D2." But after reading about spray forming and remembering the differences all the little details make (including chemistry), I do want to give this stuff a go. Perfect timing too, because I'll actually have some time this month to make some scales and a sheath for it. I'll be up early waiting to get my name on one. What time does the madness start?

You won't need to get up early on the east coast. The balloon goes up at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

Oh cool. Thanks yablanowitz, and I see my question was answered in the first line of the whole thread. Perhaps I'll get up early to practice reading instead.

I started buying Mules at 05. I have only sat out on BD1. I will go ahead and buy. However, I'm not understanding the point of another D2-ish given we had D2-ish in HXP which was #16 as I recall. I like HXP, but that was yesterdays good news.

Ditto, though I go all the way back to MT01 with no gaps - which is probably the real reason I'll buy this one. :) :spyder:

Mule Photos

#59

Post by HalpernTi »

Getting the time for new photos has become a challenge. Lots of time went into getting the Mule pages launched, then we ran out of steam.

Halpern doesn't have any in-house design/art department to take care of this task.
Every addition or revision is taken care of by our web designers.

In the past we have counted on many folks in the Spyderco forum to help us out.

If anyone has great photos of the cabernet Option4 Cabernet Paperstone, Option 5 Natural G10, Option 5 Natural Canvas Micarta, Option 4 Walnut or Cocobolo, or Rosewood Dymondwood please post.

In the past one forum member had a single photo with 15 different options.

In the meantime, we'll try to get a few close-ups of the new offerings.

If anyone receives a set of scales that aren't satisfactory, he will receive a full refund plus return shipping.
