Yea we agree then :) . Most the SE knives are essentially chisel ground. Depending on how used they can/cannot steer. I typicially place the blade at a 45 dedegree angle (or less) and drag a tooth scoring to cut. This makes short work of cardboard and the like with crisp straight lines,

The reality is, what we prefer is more a function of fashion and taste. Most knives will cut things apart.

As for function... A hollow grind is good at cutting things apart that separate when cut. For example a hanging rope, or a slab of beef.

FFG's are better when the blade needs to wedge the material it is cutting. Think like a block of cheese or through cardboard.

Since most modern urban usages of the blade are biased towards the later, FFG's are more popular.

As noted, Spyderco's tall blades, and FFG give the knife great cutting geometry.

Im kudo evil d on knowing his grinds so well. I dont hate all grinds....just saying that I think convex is better then them all lol. Idk how I contradicted what he said, no where did he say he specificially highly favored one over the other.

Just for the record though, FFG is superior at cutting through the heart of issues


The way i look at it is very simple. If you wanna test slicing performance of ANY knife of ANY grind, even comparing two knives of the same grind, get a bag of apple and start slicing them in half. The best knife will slice all the way through without splitting the apple...it will CUT all the way through, while a knife that doesn't slice very well will split the apple in some varying degree. If you wanna know how much better FFG is at slicing than hollow grinds, give this a try and see for yourself.

I'm not really into the whole "hard use folder" thing and I don't personally see Spyderco as a company that represents that to a very big extent neither. I buy Spyderco knives mainly because when I use a folder, I want a practical knife with a good mechanism that's light, easy to carry and cuts like a scalpel. If I want to abuse my knife and put it to really hard work I'd rather use my Scrapyard fixed blades, since that's what they're for. When I use a folder, I want it to just cut as well as possible and for that purpose, a FFG simply does a better job than a saber grind IMO and has enough blade stability for what I use a folder for. There are exceptions of course, for an example when I use a serrated knife, which I do sometimes. Then I'd rather have a saber or hollow grind.

A FFG also comes really in handy when you're about to slice up the tomaters with the same knife as you just field dressed a deer.
