Please forgive a noob question... I get the concept of a Forum Knife to a point (pun wasn't originally intended, but I like it so I'm leaving it in).

How does the sale of the knife work? Only currently registered forum members can buy? Only a sprint run is done and its open to the general public?

To make it really special I would think that limiting access to it is needed. I.e. only currently active (posted in 2010) member can get one.

For the 2009 forum knife, it was only sold through Spyderco's website at full MSRP but could be seen there by anybody. Taz posted a coupon code here so we could get it at a substantial discount (I think it was something like MSRP was $100 and actual price $65, something like this). It was open to everybody however, and sold out in something like 2 days.

This caused a lot of discussion, and there has been discussion on the forum but no feedback from Spyderco about how to do it this year. The general consensus is some kind of limitation of how many you can buy, who can buy it, or maybe releasing the knife in batches, something like this.

Ouch! :( Wouldn't it be best to gauge the level of interest first and to make enough to at least make sure that all Forumites that want one get one?

Also, for me to spend $100 on a locker I'd have to be sure that it wouldn't be confiscated as a gravity knife by UK Customs - they have been seizing any locking Spyderco like that recently. For that to happen I'd need to have the pivot over-tightened so that it can't be Spydie-dropped OR the blade completely removing. I know my usual source of Spydies can do that but I'm not sure Spyderco would...? :S

If the Forum knife was a SLIPIT then there would be no issues for people in the UK and they could buy from Spyderco direct and they'd be taking no risk :)
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

Yeah, one factor was that in the past, the forum knives haven't sold well, and actually I think that there were a few years before 2009 with no forum knife because of this. But in 2009 some people bought 3 or 4 and then sold them on the aftermarket after they were sold out.

I'd guess that, from sprint-run data, Spyderco must have a pretty good idea what to expect in terms of sales for various different configurations/types of knife. I don't think there have been any SLIPIT sprints yet but they have appeal outside the US so they would be very popular too, I think.

I've only been seriously into Spydies for a few years but it seems to me that right now they have a very loyal following of collectors who will all want one ... plus if it is a popular knife model at an attractive price then it will be snapped up by just about everyone who regularly buys Spydies. The lower the price, the higher the take-up ... consider the FRN UKPK as a good example - pitch them at an affordable price and nearly everyone can afford 1 and many can afford to buy every variant too. :)

Hate to be Debbie Downer, but considering that last year's Forum Knife provoked almost as much animosity as camradarie among us, I'm not sure Spyderco will want to risk another one, at least not so soon. If they do, I'm inclined to think that, as in the past, the choice of model and configuration will be decided by them, not us. If they select a model made outside the USA, it will almost certainly be in a configuration which already exists, or is about to be introduced and the only thing which will make it the Forum version unique will be the engraving. Examples of that would be the Forum Adventura and Lava. The reasons for that are both lead time and the minimum "batch" quantity their makers overseas require. If they pick a Golden made knife then both of those considerations are reduced to some extent. A special color on an FRN handled knife, or a color of G-10 they already use on other Golden models on an existing G-10 knife become more feasible. Examples might be a tan FRN, or digi-camo G-10, UKPK or Manix II.

I stand corrected. I remembered the Japanese steel used and assumed . . .

To put in my own opinion, the FRN UKPK is the perfect forum knife. Made in Golden, $60 MSRP cheap!, upgrade steel and FFG easy (given base price) and will make this absolutely unique, Sal expressed a preference for a cheap FRN forum knife, any color.

I'm working on the list.

I like it. A ffg, blue, leaf-shaped FRN UKPK would be perfect IMO. :)

Well, Deacon, we're lucky that Sal is not as sensitive to a few loud complaining voices as I am. Since he told us to go ahead and discuss this and went so far as to assure us that there would be order limits next time around I have exactly the opposite impression.

Of course Sal, Kristi, et al will make the decisions. I think they are interested in our opinions and desires and see this as useful information rather than an attempt at usurpation.

I can already feel a surge of interest in an FRN UKPK Forum knife ... and I'm happy! :D Can we just have a really nice jazzy colour or transparent FRN to mark it out from the rather subdued colours of the main models?

Here are the Golden made possibilities for an under $100 forum knife:

Model #..... Description..................MSRP........ Forum $
C94PGY......UK Penknife GIN1 FRN....59.95........43.97
C41PBK...... Native S30V FRN...........99.95........67.97
C101GP2.... Manix2 154CM G10.......129.95........85.97
C94GPFG.... UK Penknife S30V G10...149.95........94.97

For the 2009 Forum Knife, Kristi priced the Native at 40% off MRSP and added $6 for upgrade to FFG, laser etching, custom FRN color and overhead. I added $5 to the UK Penknife and $8 to the others, which do not come FFG stock.

I'm going to start differently this time with the first poll asking whether the forum knife should come from Golden. If a majority answers, "yes", then I can avoid trying to figure out which non-Golden models to include.

i think the FRN UKPK's are going to be Carpenter BD-1 instead of GIN-1. i would like to see the UKPK personally, and the FRN version would be even more affordable :D

I think the Manix 2 is one of the best Spyderco ever came up with, I came in too late to get a native, so +1 on a Manix 2 , could care less about the handle color would like it to be flat grind though :)

I was backing the frn UKPK in the earlier discussions and still think it's a no brainer. Unique color and FFG and how about 154cm?

I think we are far enough into 2010 that with the lead time required, a 2010 forum knife probably isn't going to happen. 2011 or 2012 is probably more likely.
