Is it too early to ask about the 2010 forum knife?
How about a simple approach. Have a 2 week Forum ordering period. Maximum of one knife per person. After that anyone can buy what they want.
And to make it really exciting, how about making that knife a Mini Manix 2 (i.e. a gentlemen's work pony...) or a mega Manix 2 for the forest (i.e. a folding machetti!) That's all in fun, but a Mini Manix 2 would be very cool. I have no idea if it's cheaper and I think we'd all like to see some pizazz...like a fancy steel (s30v is fancy enough, easier to sharpen, etc.)

I hope your definition of "active" isn't based on how often you post. I don't post often but I read and lurk this forum a lot. I would love to get a 2010 forum knife, assuming they do a 2010 knife. I wanted a 2009 knife, but by the time I got home from school they were already sold out...gtrtech wrote:I would like to see one for 2010, make it affordable for everyone, limit to 2 for active forum members, no dealers, numbered would be nice, simple engraving.

Its never too soon to ask but it is probably too soon for Spydeco to respond. Feel free to post about 2010 as Spyderco needs to know our thoughts. Time and manufacturing constraints will determine if there is a 2010 forum knife. An affordable knife is always good. An easy variation for Spyderco is even better. A knife not too big (legal more places) is always a plus. A custom color FRN always works.
Not really all that slick

True true. I lurked and wasted time and lost out on the 2009 one.GEAR_JUNKIE wrote:I hope your definition of "active" isn't based on how often you post. the 2009 forum knife was one of spyderco's best sprints EVER! i'm really glad i ended up with one, in spite of all the drama! and thankful that it happened. :D
the way i see it...
pros:
-- AFFORDABLE!
-- something classic, honoring the essence of spyderco (native I)
-- exciting FRN color!
-- new grind
-- embellishment (web)
cons:
-- ordering system could have been better. i like the idea of having a two week period of time where orders are limited to one per customer, and after that, opening it up all the rest to everyone else.
i really liked the "different color FRN" approach. it kept things affordable, and different/interesting. maybe this year, something like a FRN UKPK or FRN Stretch sprint would be a winner? what about one of these knives with a different steel? maybe 154? or even good ol' ATS-55? :D

I also like the idea a "different color FRN" as a potentially cheap and expedient means of creating a forum knife (assuming that coloring FRN is cheap and expedient).
If wishes were horses and all that, I'd love to see the return of a disco'd model, like the Worker or even this: :D

See? No arguing over handle color, as just about every color is already included!

A couple of historical points. One, the only Forum knife I was around to see prior to the Native was the Lava. It was the introduction of a new model, designed by a forumite and laser etched for us. You had to sign up well in advance and, if I recall correctly, pay up front as well. At the time we could order, my cashflow didn't allow me to commit. By the time they actually showed, I could have afforded it, but it was too late. No Forum knife for me. Them's the breaks.
We found out way in advance that there would be a Forum knife last year simply because some of us were discussing the possibility of going together and special ordering a forum knife of our own. Just us forumites selecting a model, pooling our money and having a batch of them etched. Kristi tipped us off earlier than she had planned simply to prevent having both "official" and "unofficial" forum knives.
For the last few years, the regulars on the Traditional Forum at Bladeforms.com have been getting together and ordering a special run of a knife selected by polls. It is a Forum knife, even though most of the forum doesn't even know about it unless they hang out in that particular subforum. There is nothing to stop us from carrying out the plan we started last year and simply making our own forum knife. I doubt we could get enough sold to get a special color, but we could certainly get a special etch done.

I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.
Very interesting!

looking at the recently-started bodega thread gives one all sorts of ideas... :D i wonder how hard it would be to get everyone to agree on an etching pattern, though...yablanowitz wrote:I doubt we could get enough sold to get a special color, but we could certainly get a special etch done.

Looks to me like there are two questions; 1) what knife?
FRN does offer lower price and unique color. Expensive materials and special insets, like the shell on the Military model rellly pumps up the cost and limits those that can afford it.
2) distribution that is fair for all forumites. After all it is a forum knife.
Perhaps the discussion at this time should be focused on what model is desired?

but is that something you would be okay with doing? limiting the availablitly to one or two for the first like 48 hrs? give us a chance? your knife, your rules, your forum but i think after last year it really wasnt fair to most of us who cant get there asap. yes kristi told weeks in advance but still during the day i cant go online to buy it, i have to wait till i get out of work...i got one but for triplesal wrote: 2) distribution that is fair for all forumites. I for one am all for an FRN forum knife, I like the affordability. The way I see it this limits the choice to current production FRN knives, or out of production FRN knives for which tooling is available and which Sal would be willing to bring back as a forum knife.
I like the idea of the FRN UKPK, which is legal to carry almost everywhere. Preferably with a flat grind like the forum native was. I honestly didn't really like the spyderweb on the blade of the forum native, but if the demand is there then by all means. Color should be something unusual, what about some unusual shade of green or something? Navy Blue?
Other options, hmm. Meerkat, delica, or cricket spring to mind, but there are dozens of potential candidates I'm sure.

I do not see anyone asking for needlessly eladorate selling restrictions here. Some simple restrictions im sure are in order. I am sure kristy and crew will not let the same thing happen again. No need to waste time bringing up old stuff that im sure they already fixed. Any forum knife will be cool. Something as simple as a new color delica, maybe full flat grind would be great. Purple would keep with the last years theme. A purple delica would be very nice. Take care.Sequimite wrote:I sure this isn't meant to be disrespectful, but a little perspective is in order. Prior to last year, Spyderco often got stuck with unsold forum knives, so they learned not to restrict the number bought, as that just reduced their sales further. Because this is a "one off" with no market research or feedback, they have no idea how many will sell. They also know that, despite our best intentions to commit to buying an item like this, when the time comes some of us might not be able to, especially in these economically depressed times.
We can dream about our ideal knife coming out as a forum knife, but if the intention is to be constructive and advance the cause of a 2010 forum knife, it is more helpful to think in terms of what can Kristi et al do most efficiently. You can bet that there is no spare time for this project and that Kristi and others spent a lot of time after hours getting the 2009 forum knife ready for production. By the some token, asking for needlessly elaborate selling restrictions just raises the specter of this labor of love resulting in complaints again, which doesn't exactly improve the chances of a 2010 forum knife.

I prefer G10, but understand the point about FRN being more affordable.
That's why I'm advocating for a FFG Manix 2. Although it is G10, it is an inexpensive knife. Given that the Forum Native was around $65, a flat ground 154CM Manix 2 in a different color G10 should be around $85. Cost of the G10 would vary by color. Naturally I vote for dark green G10, but natural G10 would also be unusual and cool.

Our reason is quite satisfied, in 999 cases out of every 1000 of us, if we can find a few arguments that will do to recite in case our credulity is criticized by someone else. Our faith is faith in someone else's faith, and in the greatest matters this is most the case.

I am all for an frn UKPK, or should I call it the SFPK- Spyderco Forum Pen Knife. A unique color with FFG should be easy for the :spyder: crew to make, as well as being affordable. I say keep it simple for all parties involved.

I llike the Caly 3 or maybe the new model. That would be a great idea. Similar to what a Mini-Manix II could be. G10 is fine. I'm in love with CF, but G10 scales are growing on me.
I still can't say enough good things about my Manix II, s90v with CF scales. Absolutely amazing. Anything liek that in a mini version - for general carry would be incredible!
