I've been trying to think of something intelligent to add to this thread, but I'm comming up empty. I like the original design very much and probably wouldn't stray too far from what worked so well the first time.

PERFECT. Large lanyard hole, full skeletonized liners, lowrider wire tip up. It's perfect.sal wrote:I would like to keep the basic 3" MBC platform.
The 4mm thick blade is not a problem for me, I kinda preferred it.
Clip:
The original clip presented many problems and complaints and I would prefer to avoid it. We can use an E4/D4 clip as a four way. We can also use a wire, but it would have to be tip up only. If we use a wire, we can add a larger lanyard hole.
Liners:
Using full liners rather than nested would be more practical. We can skeletonize the liners. We can thin out the G-10 to keep the overall weight and thickness down.

I like the idea of the Lil' Temp for it's big thinking design in a small package. My hands aren't overly large, but I prefer large handles. That and the way the knife puts as much edge length as possible into a compact design are what make it appealing.
I would prefer it if the handle were thick and wide, but if the average person wants a thin handle that's ok with me.
Edit: lowrider clip is definitely preferable. Take it straight off the Caly 3.

More Photoshop Fun!
Forgive me, but this thread has got me excited and has the wheels in my head turning. Just for the heck of it, thought I'd give photoshop a try as well.
Here's a photoshop rendition. Softened the handle and made it a little narrower...and it's in Red! Something different. :D

Nice rendition Spygineer. I'd be okay with that handle.Spygineer wrote:Forgive me, but this thread has got me excited and has the wheels in my head turning. Just for the heck of it, thought I'd give photoshop a try as well.

Our handle is a wider. We cut off the tips of the finger grooves and made several models until we got the shape of the "belly" of the handle to work ergonomically.
There has to be room for a lock and this knife needs a strong lock.
I'm going with the 4mm blade. Liner as I mentioned (full, skeltonized, thick for lock strength). I'm guessing that in lock break tests, the tang will shear the lock.
Clip decision must be made next.

My favorite Spyderco clip would be the Dodo's wire clip.
(As I look at my pocket)
How about something very similar, a little heavier gauge and maybe 2" instead of the Dodo's 1 1/2" length?
Just a thought.

Please go with the wire, I'm begging you. Although, I'm sure STR would tell you to not go with the wire, that way I'll keep sending him my folders for him to make me a lowrider clip :psal wrote:Our handle is a wider. My vote is for four-position Meerkat-style bronzed wire clip.sal wrote:Clip decision must be made next.

After a 15hrs nightshift, I log in and what do I see? This thread... great, Can't wait to see/get the new Lil Temp. I like the ideas so far, 4MM. and Superhawk lock, but PLEASE, NO wire clip. If there's one thing I don't like about my Dodo's or about my Superhawk, it's the wire clip! I just can't get a smooth draw..
"normal" endura clip, no problem. So my vote goes for the Delica/endura clip.

either clip is cool...but i'm partial to the e4/d4 clip for this one. i imagine it will look sleeker in this design, but i'm no expert obviously.
what color g10?

Sal,
Thanks for asking us!
-
I personally love the knife as is. The only thing I would change would give it a 4 way D4/E4 clip. I think the dimples are part of the knife. Keep 'em. :)
Thinning out the handle or softening the finger groves.....not needed in my opinion. I wasn't super fond of the teal color but you can't make everyone happy.
Great knife to bring back and be refined!
Lastly, this is one knife that I will break my "Not buying much in 2009" rule for. I realize however that she's probably coming out in 2010.

Thanks Sal for the opportunity to comment. I like the original handle very much, and would agree with others who feel its shape is a large part of the knife's DNA. To be blunt, going to a Stretch2 shape seems a move away from its character towards uniformity.
On the other hand, I may not buy a "2" if mostly identical to "1" since I'm fortunate to have a few 1s. Just to throw something out -- to retain the points AND still widen the audience to include those who find that the points don't work, what about repositioning points, where one is more central in the handle? Attached is an image of the knife alongside the original Keating Hornet, which has a point fairly central in the handle. I find this affords the same feel as the Lil Temp, though not quite a comfortable for me, and think it might mitigate some of the objections to the current position of the "grooves." I think, however, that it would be useful to maintain a leveling out or upsweep from the second point to the end of the handle, rather than let the line of the handle point down as in the Stretch2.
If the points were to disappear altogether, what about side-to-side horizontal grooves at key points along the top and bottom of the handle to assist in the grip? This is a great feature of the Hornet that really helps in gripping that knife, which is thinner and less bulky than the Lil Temp, more of a hideout knife.
No strong feelings either way about the other features mentioned, except to offer that a darkened/coated blade would be awesome. :) Wait a minute, did I actually state that I might not buy the new one? Very unlikely...
