It's hard to call someone who breeds chinchillas as "normal"BlondeChemist wrote:WhiteWillie, No worries! I have horses and am a chemistry graduate student, which means I definitely don't have a life. :) And to me that isn't a bad thing, I don't do normal very well.

What kind of horses do you have?BlondeChemist wrote:WhiteWillie, No worries! I have horses and am a chemistry graduate student, which means I definitely don't have a life. :) And to me that isn't a bad thing, I don't do normal very well.
I used to have a 3/4 Arab gelding. His name was Barra-Zon. He was a great horse.
Also, may I congratulate you on your pursuit of academic excellence in school. Too few people these days seem willing to tackle the tough subjects, i.e., math and science. I wish you success.

Thanks for the congrats! There are days when I wonder if it is worth it, fortunately I am incredibly stubborn so giving up isn't an option.
I have 2 arabian geldings, one is 27 and the other is 9. I have had both of them most of thier lives.
Brian - I am not sure that many of the people on this forum count as "normal", I am just even less so than the rest of you. :P

I'm 22, and I voted. I've also been looking my whole life for a woman who carries a Spydie. Finally found one, never thought she'd be a freakin' chemist. BlondeChemist, you're everything I've always wanted! Just goes to show they're really is someone out there for everyone. Even if you do spend every penny you earn on Spydies.

Here are some comments on the normal curve idea...
Nothing at all constrains the distribution of Spyderco forumites to a normal distribution. Any distribution is possible. Think about having this poll on a forum for WWII vets - there would be a cutoff at the bottom of the distribution around age 80, and it would be skewed a lot by death by natural causes, etc. Then think about a forum for people whose ages are a multiple of 20. There would only be 20 year olds, 40 year olds, etc., and there would be nobody in the 25-34 or 45-54 age groups.
Now for a forum like this one, you'd expect something pretty reasonable. There would be no substantial cutoffs in either direction (if there'd been age groups for the minors), and it would be pretty smooth. A statistician would say that only the first few cumulants of the distribution are important. But still: it's much easier to be a knifeknut of 30 years above average age than it is to be a knifeknut of 30 years below average age. So there is nonzero skewness (and probably some kurtosis too) that won't go away as the survey gets bigger.
That's basically what I see in the poll results.
Now if you did some other things - like divide people up into random groups of equal size and report the average age of each group - then the central limit theorem would apply, and as the group size got bigger, the distribution would indeed grow more normal.
It's a misconception I've seen before, so I thought I'd get huffy about it...I'll get off the soapbox now. :)

Good points Flycrash, I suppose it is all in how you pose the data and sampling size and how you poll it.

This was a great idea & I am alittle suprised with the results up until now but only 213 of the 6,835 members have voted so far :)sal wrote: Actually it is a very interesting poll. There is a farily large spread, which for us is good. Given our limited appeal (Expensive, fugly, etc) we try hard to reach a wide variety of age (and experience) groups. As we learn, we try to improve.
