Wow I am glad I have 6 D'Allara drop points. Sad to see such a great knife disappear.

Well, I finally placed an order for a Manix to join the Mini I've had for a while.

And yet the Poliwog is still going strong. Thats one I fully expected to be discontinued.

Time to get a Volpe now, even if it is wrong handed. :p

Hmm, mini/Manix gone. I wonder if it was dismal sales or a Manix 2 in the horizon that caused its demise. I guess we'll know for sure when the 08 catalog comes out. I will need to move the mini to the top of the list for Xmas :spyder: :) .

The T-Mag does not surprise me. I like the design, but it's a bit high in price for a magnetic slipjoint that will screw up my ATM card.

.....
These ones didn't surprise me also, especially the one with the paw prints on the handle. :D :spyder:

Hrm... I guess I know what I'm getting myself for christmas now, a Kris and a Adventura! Whee!! Merry Christmas to all!

And could possibly the cause of all these models being dropped be because there is a large amount of new ones coming? Soon?

Let's hope they will be substituted with something similiar and better. Anyway it is time to think about a reserve Manix C95 complementred with its smaller brother.

Mr Blonde wrote:BTW for any pure collectors out there, better get a few of those T-mags. Special design, special materials, custom collaboration, and very short production run! Introduced in mid 2007, discontinued in 2007.

Wouter
That's gotta be a record. As much as I felt the T-Mag to be a totally impractical design exercise, I expected it to stick around at least a full year.

Looking forward to a great 2008 for Spyderco and for us all.

Not sure if they could pull that off Dan, the primary attraction of the NIII is the contoured handle, might be hard to do in SS. Aluminum with liners maybe. ;) :D
STR wrote:I'm not surprised about most of those but the Mini Manix caught me by surprise some. I figured that one would be around for several years after the Manix was discontinued. Didn't see them both being discontinued together at all.

STR
Funny Steve, I felt the opposite. The regular Manix at least "made sense" to me as a large hard use folder, even if I had little use for one. The 83mm version retained all the bulk of the original, but with less blade length.

Yep, if I were a betting man, I'd have lost money on the 'Wog too. Do hope that Spyderco uses Fox again in the future for more folders. While the Volpe was not my cup of tea, the fit and finish are top notch.

Better act fast, especially if you want the PE version of the C95, think it will become hard to find and start escalating in price rather quickly.

Lol Paul, yeah the contoured SS handles would be costly to produce. I was thinking more in the lines of the grind of the blade, and possibly slightly fatter flat handles. Maybe even a more 'contemporary' bladesteel ???

TMag held no fascination for me, yet I am surprised that it would be discontinued so quickly. Maybe it was a case of cutting their losses for Spyderco :(

It is a pity some of the list in the OP will be discontinued as many here have not yet experienced some of the obvious rapture the owners of those knives are displaying. I speak from my perspective in that respect as my wishlist does include a few of those blades onthe disco list for EOY 2007.

Hear you Dan, but the last batch or two of N2's were VG-10, so aside from ZDP not sure what would constitute a more "contemporary" Japanese blade steel. As for fatter handles, unless they were somehow hollowed out on the inside, I think the added weight would reduce desirability more than the improved(?) feel would increase it.

Yes, it's a shame some folks won't get to experience some of the knives being dropped. As for planned acquisitions, remember that, in the most precise sense of the word, these models have already been discontinued, some of them probably for some time. No guarantee how long "stock on hand" will last for any of them, and one or more of them may already be at the point where distributor and dealer stock is all that exists and Golden neither has, or will get/produce any more.

To me, the biggest shame is the Ocelot. It's a **** fine knife and I cannot help but thinking that just removing the paw print depressions from the scales would have made a tremendous difference in its marketability. I may yet pick myself up a spare one, have Tom Krien give it his full flat grind treatment then have STR replace the scales with something more to my tastes, maybe even see if he'd like to try his hand at Ti front bolsters and stag. :D

100% agreement with you... beautiful knife, great ergonomics, lot's of belly to the blade - but the pugs are "all show, no go." What good is a hunting knife that can't be used in the field without filling all those holes with gore?

I am sad to see it go, but more because of what might have been.

Its always a bit of a shock to see that disco'd list. For Spydie Fans its like reading the opituarie section of the newspaper and seeing some of your friends in there. The Scorp was a personal fav and the Manix's? I thought they would have really appealed to all those millons of Buck 110 type fans who like solid and heavy above all. Maybe to expensive for um. What the heck do I know

Kumo discontinued? Too bad.
I would love to see Spyderco's take on a sgian dubh, something like the CS Brave Heart, but from Sal's workshop - VG 10, G-10...
...but no, no, you know it all, it's harmless little bunny...

I've always heard that the Manix was a good seller, the only reason I can think of for discontinuing it would be to introduce something better.

I'm hoping we'll see the Tuff in 08.

1) UKPK upgrade to the Urban.
2) Manix family upgrade (so it has been rumoured) to another model.
3) Native - the tradition continues, just not the S/S model
4) Kiwi - the tradition continues, just not the MOPA model

The Ocelot model always represented a certain 'cuteness' factor. Those doggy pawprints really made it more of a very light user for any dog lover out there. Pity as Paul says, to just remove the doggy prints the blade would still be a great one. For me I'd say divot those pawprints rather than having them all the way ??? is that possible at all with a patterned cutout such as the pawprints???

Scorpius, Kris, Adventura & Volpe ....**** shame :(

RIP all you lovely ones on that list... we love you all :)

Cheers

The only model that would have surprised me more to be on the list would be the Delica or Endura. Discontinuation of both Manix versions caught me flat footed. Just assumed that they were big sellers, but maybe volume is not the issue? Hopefully there will be a new generation of even better big folders to fill its shoes in the 2008 catalog.
