Perhaps that explains why the Surefire rechargeables are not as popular as they could be. There are some models that Surefire has that take the newer tech and better performing rechargeable cells as well as Mariner has mentioned.

I don't think it will be much longer and you will see Surefire upgrade their own rechargeables to the newer types of cells.
Very good point jimbo. As memory serves, Streamlight rechargeables also use Nickel-cadmium battery sticks. While I use rechargeable batteries in several lights, the only rechargeable light that I own is an Inova T4 which, by contrast, uses a Lithium Ion battery and has proved to be very popular.

My experiences with Surefire's 123 batts has been positive. I've gone through a few boxes of them with no problems, and would recommend them to others. They're a pretty good deal.

I am sure that the Surefire batteries are that cheap anymore. They were a great deal.

They are 21.00 for 12 now.
Still not bad.I bet they went up because of dealers.I know they were paying the same price fron surefire as anyone else and then marking them up to make a profit.Last time I was at a gunshow a dealer was selling 12 for 24.00 and I told hime surefire had them for 15.00.He said yeah thats the price I pay too but I got to make something on them and with the shipping added in he wasn't that much higher.

I wasn't aware that they'd gone up in price. It's been about six months since I've ordered any.

Honestly, I don't use that many batteries these days; with the LED, they seem to last forever. I used the LED for about 95% of my needs, but have the Z3 "just in case" I need to sear/melt someone's retinas from their eye sockets. :D

As an officer I used the LED for searching various areas of the prison pretty much daily. That was the main use of the light, which it filled well.

I could have gotten by with cheaper lights, more than likely. However, I'm pretty sure they'd have gotten mangled during some of the incidents I went through.

I currently own:

G2 (black), G2 (tan), E1E, E2E, E2D, Z2, Z3, GZ2, C2, L1, L2, M2, M3, M3T

For most tasks I use the L1 or L2. I am looking for an A2 for the same tasks.

If I was carrying a light for SD reasons, I would think about either a Z2 or 6P... Then add the aftermarket TID (Tactical Impact Device). As "cool" as the E2D looks I have some issues with it.

One, impact device + pocket clip = OUCH to operator! In my own tests, I found I have to be careful, not to jam said clip into my hands.

Two, I think the TID is a much more painful item than the bezel of the E2D.

The G2's are "OK," but not too much to get excited about, compared to other lights in the line. Also, the price of a 6P is not that much higher than the G2.

I have been using a Blackhawk Gladius of late. It has given good service. It also puts the Surefires to shame (LED's) in the throw department. It is a big light, and really needs a sheath however. The "strobe" feature is pretty neat too.

SureFire 6P here - nice light. I bought it more as a backup light. For me, I found that my Inova X5 and a few other LED ones just didn't punch thru ambient light that well. Example - dark, streetlight, dark. I was a little concerned at first about the short runtime, but then I'm only using it for short times, so its turning out not so bad. I bought the X5 first, and it's nice to know I can use batteries in my Inova to get the most life out them. For the most part, I'm using either my Gerber Infinity, or one of my other Dorcy ones. Up here, I can get the SureFire batteries for $3 each, so despite the fact it's not as cheap as AAA's or AA's, it's more than affordable in the grand scheme of things :)

Gord, that's pretty much the same approach I follow: using each light for a specific scenario. The incandescent lights reach out, but aren't really need for mundane, close-up tasks. The LEDs are great for everyday, non-emergency uses.

Like you said, I use the LED far more often than my incandescent lights. But it's nice to have both.
