Just got the good news that Massachusetts started the spring trout stocking yesterday. I'll be doing some pond hopping tomorrow!u.w. wrote: ↑Sat Mar 08, 2025 2:14 pmWell I went fishing again last weekend, and did catch my dinners again - but - took no photos. This morning I went out again, and luck was with me again, and I caught my dinners (tonight and tomorrow night) for the weekend. The angle of the photo may throw off the scale a little - the bigger of the two is ~18" (Rainbow).
still carrying my 15V BBB Mili2.
The photo does a decent job of showing how I've thinned it a bit - or - widened the edge bevel a bit.
Nick,
I hope you get out soon. When I think of this tread, I automatically think of you right there with and/or in it.

Awesome reason to get into it! I've been fishing with my nieces since they were very young and they look forward to it every summer now.
Hey vivi
Take them bream/bluegill fishing initially because with kids it’s all about catching to keep them interested…I suggest going to Walmart and getting this:

Took a start/finish line pre-run photo the morning before the start
Did the run (3/22) Fantastic time!, came back [to the beach] same afternoon.
Went fishing Sunday (3/23) and caught - what I think is my first Brookie? (~13") - my dinner for the evening. Could've been a pale/almost albino Brown? Was sure delicious either way.
Grate Days for sure!!
FFG LC200N PacSalt was in my pocket Friday & Saturday, Mili2 15V on Sunday and since

Still haven't gotten around to supplying up...been real busy at work.u.w. wrote: ↑Wed Mar 12, 2025 5:49 pmHey vivi
I'm sure no expert fisherman, but I'll happily tell you what I'm using, where I got it, etc...
For panfish (shellcracker, bream, pumpkin seed, red ear, crappie(s), etc...), and up to sh-medium size bass both large & small mouth, all the trout I've been catching, and even some "eating size" channel cats it's been working very well for me.
It is a cork handled one piece ultra-lite rod/reel combo. Shakespeark Micro Spin or Micro Series 4' 6 inch rod & reel combo. The reel comes spooled with 4lb Stren monofilament on it.
I set my drag to let the line out before the line breaks and have had no issues at all.
They run ~ $19 to $20 at Walmart. The open face spinning reel that comes on it is a forest green color.
So one piece Shakespear 4' 6" cork handle ultra lite rod, and Shakespear forest green open face ultra lite open face spinning reel.
You could always pull the 4lb mono that comes on it, and re-spool with 4lb diameter but 15lb test Spyderwire braid line. That'd take quite a bit to break; especially if the drag is set right, and the reel and rod will handle it just fine.
You can sure pay more and maybe get more. You'll easily get it done with that Shakespear Microspin/Micro Series rod/reel combo. It easily fits into my Rav as well.
For bigger stuff I'll get bigger rod/reel. For the vast majority of what I do, this gets it done.
I'll also say that the Ugly Stick rods are good to go. I've used them for decades, and had only good experiences.

You cannot go wrong with a Bream Buster (telescoping cane pole) a cork/bobber and some crickets. I have taken my sons who are now Juniors in high school to city park ponds and catch and release a ton of bream. Would not eat them due to being neighborhood runoff. But we have fun and rarely do I have one we can’t get the hook out of, meaning it dies. Drop that cork out in 3-8 feet of water with one lead sinker and fun you will have. Pro tip- take an expendable towel and in the car alcohol hand sanitizer as bream are very smelly fish
