2024 should be the year we see the HP Delica. My RIT dye is waiting and my apple trees have finally matured.

Been wondering about this too. When I hear things like Sal had a production sample in hand (forget when he said this), I can’t help but think, “oh boy it must be close!”
Of course I have no idea how long it takes to produce things. I just need to chill. Regardless, I eagerly await this model.

K390 @ RC 64-65 runs circles around VG10 @ RC 59-60, for both edge stability and wear resistance.
Like a Ford Mustang runs circles around a lowered Toyota Camry with mag wheels and a hood scoop.

Don't forget, the choice of VG-10 is an intentional design feature to separate the effect of geometry from that of steel/HT.
If it turns out to be amazing, then I'm sure that CruCarta/MagnaCut/REX121 variants will eventually land, if not then all of us who follow through and get one despite the "classic" steel choice will still have a cool piece of SpyderHistory...

Re: High Performance Delica Excitement
You are probably right @awa54, and Spyderco will have their reasons for their approach.
In my opinion however, it is a missed opportunity if this project kicks off to only optimise for geometry, and not steel too... Geometry is easy to optimise yourself by dropping a bevel angle significantly or get a regrind, or both. What is hard to get is:
1. a high performance steel with
2. an optimised heat treatment and
3. an optimised geometry.
The stock standard K390 Delica gets me there two thirds of the way. If I put a decently low edge on it I am 90% there. A thin regrind takes me to 100%.
VG10 seems like an odd choice since a K390 Delica already exists and is a proven and well-loved high performance package. I sincerely do not understand the choice of VG10 here.
Then again, there are many things I do not understand in this world...

From earlier in the thread. K390 apparently was the first choice…

Re: High Performance Delica Excitement
We already know that M4 can handle extremely thin edges (love that grind on my GB1!), so there are several steels in the Spyderco lexicon that will be able to *really* perform in this platform (assuming that it's anything like what we're thinking it will be).
I'd vote for high hardness AEB-L, 4V, or Magnacut as follow-up steels.
...if wishes were flash batches, sigh.

Very disappointing. I think I'll go buy another K390 Delica to make me feel better.

LOL, I love my K390 Delica and I'm carrying my K390 Para 3 as I type this.Brock O Lee wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 10:38 pmVery disappointing. I think I'll go buy another K390 Delica to make me feel better.
Now that you mention it, I feel pretty awesome today!
IIRC, AEB-L can attain a few points RC harder than 14C28N and my limited experience with both steels has been that AEB-L has a bit better apex stability, but either one would be fine by me ...also I don't think Spyderco has used 14C28N *yet*.

Re: High Performance Delica Excitement
I haven't heard that, but it could be. 14C28N is supposed to be AEB-L improved. Same toughness, better edge retention and corrosion resistance.awa54 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 8:40 amLOL, I love my K390 Delica and I'm carrying my K390 Para 3 as I type this.Brock O Lee wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2024 10:38 pmVery disappointing. Re: High Performance Delica Excitement
looks like at the same hardness (RC 62) 14C28N is better on paper.
Kershaw 14C28N (USA) and Civivi (China) both have easier to deform (and grind) edges compared to my AEB-L Spyderco Urban (Italy).
My strong suspicion is that the Urban is at several points RC higher than the other two knives...
I'm also not really sure what Nitro-V is supposed to bring to the game, since it doesn't outperform either 14C28N or AEB-L on paper, or in my use (Civivi) ...unless it's a lot cheaper to produce?

Re: High Performance Delica Excitement
I agree with you on the Nitro-V. I just don't get it. As for the 14C28N, a lot of us on this forum love the stuff. I have a couple of knives in that steel that were run pretty hard and the edges last a good while at razor sharpness. When it goes away, it goes away, no middle ground. Like AEB-L/13C26 it is really easy to sharpen for me, though, so touch ups are a snap. On Larrin's chart it has 440C having better edge retention, but that has not been my experience, at all. I would reverse those numbers, well, maybe 440C is better than 3 a bit.awa54 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 7:27 pmlooks like at the same hardness (RC 62) 14C28N is better on paper.
