What's up DayWalker? I thought I should put in a plea here so i copied this from what i posted in another thread...
Regarding your preference on a hawkbill shape for utility, on another thread about the SWICK I posted about wanting a SPOT made with Daywalker's protohawk blade shape but another forumite posted that it would then be a Perrin La Griffe (here's a link to some of his models:http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/...2/grifferev.htm) but IMO the SPOT is already an "authorized" version of the La Griffe and if the great factory already "worked somethin out" with Fred Perrin then why not come out with a Hawkbill SWICK (but that's in another thread! )? Maybe another custom collab?
I put up a thread on this "general discussion" slot about handle materials & types. We can talk about the Hawkbill handle possibilities on this thread if you all like. Because actually that is one of the few things about our new "to be wished for Hawkbill knife" that we haven't talked much about. G-10 is right now my handle material of choice for the New proposed Hawkbill(s). I like G-10 for all around good functional purposes. Plus it is corrosion proof for the most part. But I am not at all opposed to Titanium, T-6061 Aerospace aluminum ( anodized of course), and even FRN under the right circumstances. I personally do think that FRN has it's place. I don't hate it like a lot of folks do. The weight of the handle material is to me very important because Hawkbills need all the versatility that they can have.
We got to also talk about the Handle materials, possible sheaths and holsters, advanced sharpening devices ( especially for field use) and even a maintenance kit for the field. OK you guys get the picture because I not only want this thread to run for a while I also want to see us cover a lot of important bases :spyder:
The first thing that come to mind is a revamped Ronin with a hawkbill. 3" to 4" inch VG-10 Hawk SE or PE. Micarta handle.. with custom leather sheath. Neck tie with a belt clip (on sheath).
That would be my camping, hunting and hiking knife.
I'd like to see the new hawkbill with either G10 or FRN. The aluminum seems to me to be too slippery when wet. I suppose you could have g10 inserts in an aluminum handle. I don't care for the rubber inserts as they seem to wear and tear with regular use.

The Tasman is looking to be a H-1 hawkbill with Black and/or yellow FRN.
I'm just hoping they have plans for a 3" or 4" hawkbill in S30v with G10...

I agree, whatever handle is used needs to either have inserts or FRN/G10. Straight metal gets too slippery in my opinion.

I'm hoping for black - not really into the yellow handles - of course dark blue would be fine too :)
Jeez - I thought I had the quote thing down - I guess not.
Sorry gang, but I must admit I'm getting a chuckle out of this. Since this thread began, one new hawkbill, albeit a Byrd, has hit the streets. Another, the CF Harpy, will be out in a few months, and yet a third, the Tasman Salt has been promised for the future. What is almost funny is that, while almost everyone who has posted to this thread is gung-ho for yet another hawkbill on top of those, there appear to be almost as many different ideas of what it should look like as there are posters.

The Tasman Salt will be available very soon - I have it on good authority that pictures will also be available soon...
I agree that there are a lot of different ideas concerning a new hawkbill, but the one thing I see cropping up over and over again is an MBC-rated hawkbill with G-10 scales and S30V blade.
This seems to be the one hawk that has yet to be made.

Deacon Sir there is one thing I think in your esteemed wisdom that you may be overlooking ( but then again you are probably a "chess move" ahead of me :D ). That is the fact that WE and when I say WE I mean all of us here on this Great Forum who would like to see the Hawkbills taken to a new level of awareness. Not just another model(s) ( but that is part of the mission ) but to go as far as making a video to let the people know that these Hawkbill knives are viable, practical tools. They have gotten such a bad rap in my opinion with all of the negative stigma attached to their looks.
Sir we are getting their attention. I just know it. But it is positive attention. They are using this thread carefully as a pulse to see what genuinely will fly in the sales charts. Keep in mind the Harpy has truly been one of their primary flagship knives for many years now. I am saying why stop there? With a video to educate and with a series of different Hawkbills with different job designations I think Spyderco will not only take the lead with this but they can do this in a way that when people even think of a Hawkbill knife the name Spyderco will be synonymous with these great, for the most part "undiscovered" tools.
And Deacon Sir you yourself have been a great contributor to this thread ( even though you and I don't agree sometimes :D :D :D ). But that's the whole idea. Let's get all this on the table for the GREAT SPYDER FACTORY to be able to separate the hype from the substance which will take these blades to a higher level. JD :spyder: O

:spyder: Some of us are holding out for a heavy MBC hawkbill. But we're surely still buying what comes out along the way! :spyder:

Re: Tasman No I have not heard any news yet. But you got to understand the Great Spyder Factory. It was a whole year before I got a new 204 Sharpmaker after they first started advertising them. It took me 9 months to get a Titanium ATR after I first saw one of them in their catalog.
They are notorious at throwing teasers at you  . I guess it is a marketing ploy of some sort but it beats the heck out me as to why companies would do things like that. I did hear today that the Carbon Fiber Harpy will probably be ready for delivery sometime around X-mas.
But we have to be relentless for the new Hawkbill(s) or series of Hawkbills. The Spyderhawk now has such a cult following that it can not be ignored NO not even in the slightest  . OK Forumites let's keep beating the drum, squeaking the wheel, pounding our fists at the front door, ringing the bell at the front desk until we get this new Hawkbill(s). JD :spyder: O
