Me, same as always, carrying the ZDP DF2 and K390 Endela.u.w. wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 11:32 amLadybug,
I doubt too, that many, if any, would notice that 0.3 oz weight difference carrying it. This discussion has come up "here and there" over the this year... maybe longer?
It's more "the principle" though, I think. The DF2 weighs 1.2 oz, so 0.3 oz is 25% of the weight. So the Chap is 25% heavier than the DF2 right? A quarter, or 25%, of anything IS a "noticeable" or mention worthy amount, by most - if not everyone's opinion I'd say.
If you increased the weight of everything you carried by 25% it would make a Huge, and noticeable difference. Conversely, ...
and Wartsein,
I have several DF2's and like them quite a bit, for what they are. That said, they do not get the nod when it comes to trail carry, or a lot of other carries.
The blade is almost big enough, but just not quite - For Me - i.e. not big enough to with One Cut, cut a big cucumber in pieces, or some summer sausages, or hard salamis, or pepperonis, or Lions Mane mushrooms off the Red Oak Trees that they grow on around here this time of year. And the handle is a just a bit too small when using to cut branches, vines, and saplings. Those things are not the DF2's forte, in my opinion/experience.
They really are a FANTASTIC "Little Big Knife" though, and I think you'd enjoy one quite a bit.
and I'm carrying the Endela again today
u.w.
Unless I am mistaken, quite possible, the FRN Chap weighs 2.1 oz vs the DF2's 1.2 oz. I love my Chap(s) and carry one when I can only carry one knife. But, the DF2 is lighter, smaller, and less "scary" to pull out at lunch and cut my apples. etc., with.
Agreed that the DF2 is small to be cutting branches with but, I did have the need once to split some roughly 1" sticks for kindling using this DF2:
I wouldn't try that with the FFG models but this one has a much thicker, stiffer blade. I used a 2.5" piece of wood to baton with.
I always hike with a DF2 in pocket. Also have a Cold Steel fixed blade attached to my day pack.

I’m quoting you, Ladybug, but it’s really just a general answer to the DF2 discussion that developed.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 10:56 amthe df2 is only 0.3 oz lighter than the chaparral lw. i honestly don't know how people even feel that kind of difference.Wartstein wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 10:28 amAlso I think it is a very cool and also very cool LOOKING design, but practically speaking the Chap FRN is "my DFly" (which goes to show that I am still not THAT concerned with weight - cause in this capacity the DFly blows the Chap out of the water of course).
First of all, like someone already pointed out, the DF2 is 1.2oz and the Chap FRN is 2.1oz, so that’s a difference of 0.9oz or 75%.
If that kind of weight difference matters to someone is very individual, but it is noticeable.
Now even if the difference was only 0.3oz, that wouldn’t necessarily matter so much. There are some threshold values that you’re either over or under.
When I put my DF2 in my summer shorts, I don’t notice it’s there. Any other knife, even if barely heavier, I will notice.
I might need the heavier knife, and then it would be OK, but for “just in case” carry I prefer to not notice.
For the last couple of months a DF2 of some type has been my most carried EDC knife. It’s jeans season so right now I carry the KC pakkawood DF2 as it’s a bit nicer and I don’t notice the added weight wearing jeans.
Like u.w. I usually don’t see the DF2 fit for backpacking, long hikes and other demanding outdoor activities, but as an EDC knife for someone who does mostly office work with some occasional electrical or mechanical assembly, it’s close to perfection.
It’s the only model I have in more than two versions, and I consider adding more

dang. now i feel like a dummy. i'm not sure where i got 0.3 oz. i can see where almost a full ounce may be noticeable, but i still maintain that, at these weights, it's negligible. i guess that's subjective, but i can hardly feel the weight difference between my manix lw and my df2 clipped to my pocket when wearing normal clothing. when i wear lw shorts, the pac salt goes in my waistband and i can't feel the weight there at all.aicolainen wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 1:50 amI’m quoting you, Ladybug, but it’s really just a general answer to the DF2 discussion that developed.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 10:56 amthe df2 is only 0.3 oz lighter than the chaparral lw. i honestly don't know how people even feel that kind of difference.Wartstein wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 10:28 amAlso I think it is a very cool and also very cool LOOKING design, but practically speaking the Chap FRN is "my DFly" (which goes to show that I am still not THAT concerned with weight - cause in this capacity the DFly blows the Chap out of the water of course).

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
I’m so used to having a pocket knife in my back pocket it feels weird when I realize (on the rare occasion) I’ve forgotten one. In that pocket, weight is irrelevant. Urban to Shaman, doesn’t matter. In the top of a cargo pocket in baggie shorts/pants, yeah a heavy knife or anything really is annoying. I despise bulky things in my pockets that can swing/bounce.

Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
It's absolutely subjective, that's why I pointed out that there is no right or wrong here, just personal preference.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 4:54 amdang. now i feel like a dummy. i'm not sure where i got 0.3 oz. i can see where almost a full ounce may be noticeable, but i still maintain that, at these weights, it's negligible. i guess that's subjective, but i can hardly feel the weight difference between my manix lw and my df2 clipped to my pocket when wearing normal clothing. when i wear lw shorts, the pac salt goes in my waistband and i can't feel the weight there at all.
Let me also point out that I mostly look at this from a 9 to 5 office/city outfit point of view. The "ED" in EDC, so to speak.
On my own time, outdoors or working on projects at home, there is a lot more variation to what I want to use and how I carry, so my size and weight preference change accordingly.
Luckily I do prefer to carry small and light when that's all I need, but even if I didn't, the knife laws around here are such that you want to carry as small and concealed as possible anyways.
enough talk, my office/city carry for the last couple of weeks
Re: What Spyderco is in your pocket today??
I am not a weight matters guy, for the most part. At 270lbs I belch about 1oz. I sweat a Spyderco Province on a hot day's walk/jog. I had someone try and sell me an upgrade on a bicycle one time, I think it was half a pound to a pound lighter. I laughed.ladybug93 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 23, 2021 4:54 am

I added ti scales to a PM2 and a Manix 2. I like them much better now. But to be fair, I found my brass scaled Manix 2 to be a bit of a chunky boi.
