Except for my trail runs which was the "Hyker" (drop point LC200N Salt 2), which was used to harvest some Lion's Mane mushrooms (it's that time of year again here) :-)

I have older version in BD1 which I like but definitely fall in love with this beauty.
Bright Spyder logo and inscriptions on the shaded steel with yellow handle, smooth action, precisely made large secondary bevel (small angle of sharpening), distinct half stop when closing.
I'm impressed.

Top one here. Pretty much the same one as every day now. Such an item :)

I had one of my Guardian 3's on me yesterday, but only used the Dragonfly. I've been trying to carry 3 knives a week at work (each knife at least 2 days a week) just to keep them all in use. I haven't had a new Spyderco steel in quite a while now, so I no longer do those week long carries with those reviews I used to do. On occasion I will still carry one for a week if I'm really enjoying it.

The Dragonfly is holding up just fine for the simple tasks of opening packages, cutting plastic strapping, etc. The Vtoku 2 is a little on the dull side as of right now...but that's ok, I love sharpening!

The DFly actually is a knife I´d like to try myself in various tasks, just to really see where its limits are or rather what it still can do well despite being so small.
Also I think it is a very cool and also very cool LOOKING design, but practically speaking the Chap FRN is "my DFly" (which goes to show that I am still not THAT concerned with weight - cause in this capacity the DFly blows the Chap out of the water of course).

But then: If I purchased all the knives I´d just like to try, this great hobby would get a lot more time- and money- consuming as it already is (worth every Euro-cent, don´t get me wrong, but there are other things I like too... )

the df2 is only 0.3 oz lighter than the chaparral lw. i honestly don't know how people even feel that kind of difference.

the df2 is great, but the only reason i have one at all is because i had a 2.5" blade length limit where i used to work. the 12mm of edge length is far more noticeable to me than the 0.3 oz. i'd much rather have the chaparral lw if i needed a small knife. also, xhp is way better than vg10. my df2 is a salt though, so there's no comparison there. in fact, the only df2 i'd ever buy now is a blacked out pe salt (h1 or lc200n).

I doubt too, that many, if any, would notice that 0.3 oz weight difference carrying it. This discussion has come up "here and there" over the this year... maybe longer?

It's more "the principle" though, I think. The DF2 weighs 1.2 oz, so 0.3 oz is 25% of the weight. So the Chap is 25% heavier than the DF2 right? A quarter, or 25%, of anything IS a "noticeable" or mention worthy amount, by most - if not everyone's opinion I'd say.
If you increased the weight of everything you carried by 25% it would make a Huge, and noticeable difference. Conversely, ...

I have several DF2's and like them quite a bit, for what they are. That said, they do not get the nod when it comes to trail carry, or a lot of other carries.

The blade is almost big enough, but just not quite - For Me - i.e. not big enough to with One Cut, cut a big cucumber in pieces, or some summer sausages, or hard salamis, or pepperonis, or Lions Mane mushrooms off the Red Oak Trees that they grow on around here this time of year. And the handle is a just a bit too small when using to cut branches, vines, and saplings. Those things are not the DF2's forte, in my opinion/experience.

They really are a FANTASTIC "Little Big Knife" though, and I think you'd enjoy one quite a bit.

i get what you're saying. and i know i basically said this in the backpacking thread, but i don't see a knife a sensible place to cut weight. to me, an extra 0.3 oz over 1.2 oz is worth it for the extra functionality. actually, i'd much rather carry a pacific salt instead of either of them, and it's over twice the weight of the df2, but it's more than twice as capable and still only weighs 2.6 oz.

i don't think that this principal translates to every part of your backpacking gear. for example, lw hiking clothes are typically very durable and a much better choice than jeans. down or lw synthetics are just as good, if not better than a heavy sleeping bag, etc. i'm not talking about making everything in your pack heavy. i'm just talking about carrying a sensible blade that is lw and capable instead of a small blade that is lighter, but far less capable.

i agree that the df2 is a good little big knife, except for when it isn't. as you pointed out, the blade length is just too short for even normal cutting tasks. you can make it work, but i'd hate to have that annoyance when i am finally taking a break and trying to enjoy some food. even worse, i'd hate to not have enough blade when i need it. spyderedge on the df2 helps quite a bit with cutting power, but it doesn't give you any extra reach. and, if you can only carry a knife the size of a df2, it's one of the best choices out there. but, if you can carry something bigger, there are better weight:function options, in my opinion.
