Why do you prefer the 1 over the 2? I wanna get a stretch. I think the 2 looks much cooler and the finger coil looks more comfortable. Thoughts?
Don´t know if you are referring to the straight spine or "regular" Stretch 2 when you say it´d look "much cooler".
Anyway, why do I prefer the "1":
-
More cutting edge (in a lighter, more compact package):
Yes, "just" 6mm more edge, but that´s already noticeable and makes the "1" more versatile (6mm for example is the difference between a Para 3 and Manix 2 LW cutting edge).
Even more edge than a PM2 gives you.
-
Shallower, shorter choil: :
Gives me more control than the deeper choil of the "2", and cause it is shorter it lets the hand sit closer to the cutting edge when not using the choil
-
More pronounced "hook" at the rear end of the Stretch 1 handle:
Really locks the hand in place, great for pull cuts. Sure, it will make the grip area of the handle too short for really huge hands, but my L to XL fit in there just fine (the Stretch 1 offers about the same grip area as a PM2, or even a hair more).
-
Lighter and more compact carry, amazing blade/edge to handle ratio:
The 1 is not much longer than a Delica when closed, but offers a lot of edge to work with (as said, more than the much bulkier PM2). I think when it comes to Spydies with a choil, only the Caly 3.5 is even better in that regard.
-
Perfect tip:
A bit pointier than on the "regular " Stretch 2, but a bit more robust than on the SS Stretch 2
-
Looks:
For me just the essence of Sals "form follows function" design philosophy. The Stretch 1 might look a bit weird with its funky blade shape at first glance, but use it for a while, experience its superior versatility and performance and you´ll probably begin to love the looks...
That being said: The Stretch 2 is a great folder too. But just a bit more "Spyderco mainstream" (not meant negative at all!), especially in the SS version. A bit short cutting edge for the overall size (the blade does not even fill the available space in the handle). But: For XXL hands the "2" is certainly the better choice, but for those who sometimes value a very compact folder with still really long cutting edge and amazing ergos, the "1" is a perfect choice.
Happen to have an old pic of Stretch 1, SS Stretch 2, "regular" Stretch 2 (Blade of the "1" a bit dirty)
These days I don´t own any Stretch 2 anymore, sold then all, but have five Stretch 1... (since it is discontinued, this is the only knife I have backups for)
