This was at the Cape Cod Canal, which is a little over an hour’s drive from Boston. Some world class fish are caught here every year, so it has become a popular spot for hopeful anglers like myself. With the current moving, these little schoolies are surprisingly strong!
Caught four stripers, all about the same size, and a blue fish that got off the hook right when I got it to the rocks.
Might go back again tomorrow morning. If the full moon currents push enough bait through, it should make for a hot bite. Maybe even something bigger than a schoolie.
The canal is such a hot spot because it allows fish to cut through Massachusetts instead of going around. They can skip many miles of migration around the outside of the state and get to northern waters sooner. This means there is also some very good striper fishing in Boston Harbor and even north to parts of Maine for most of the sumemer. If you made a trip to Boston but were unable to make it to the Cape Cod Canal, there is still ample opportunity to catch some nice striped bass in the area.

Thanks for sharing, Dan! That’s a nice walleye. Ive still never caught a walleye. They’re not so abundant in Massachusetts but I could target them reliably in parts of northern New England. I hear they’re good eating!

Agreed, very nice walleye and a Siren too!!! I haven’t caught many but they are delicious and that’s a good one

Caught it in the Cape Cod Canal this morning on my new Canal setup.
11ft Shimano Tiralejo rod and Shimano Ultegra Ci4+ 14000 reel! First season using it but I have been loving this combo so far. It’s light weight enough that I can comfortably cast for hours without really needing a break and it’s plenty strong enough to haul in big fish against the current in the canal.
Shimano actually markets this rod and reel pairing as a “Long Cast Concept” which apparently to helps provide longer casts. I think I’m a believer because I’ve been out casting pretty much everyone else fishing near me when using it, it’s impressive.

Hope you can try it sometime , I like it a lot . In Minnesota they have size regulations and how many yo can take home to insure a healthy population . Buddies eat like Kings at cabin and take what they can legally take home .

Walleyes my favorite freshwatwr fish to eat! That's a good size one there. Do you guys eat the cheeks out of them? It almost taste like a scallop, and you cook them about the same too. My buddy is a guide for walleye and had a gallon zip lock bag full of them by end of season. Fantastic! We visited a beautiful state park yesterday and fished off a pier, supposedly for rainbow trout. A local told us that he hadn't caught a rainbow there in several weeks. We caught 12 fish between us, all baby throwbacks, but four different species of bream-like fish. So it was interesting. The funny thing was that a young tourist from Utah fished next to us and caught only one fish - an 8" largemouth bass.
So next week we're going after pink salmon.

There are a handful of lakes in northern New England that have salmon stocking programs but they’re seasonal and heavily regulated. There is a tiny population of native Atlantic Salmon that is tracked returning to rivers in Maine but they’re listed as federally endangered and are illegal to target.

My nieces love fishing and something like that would be perfect to bring them out fishing on the lake instead of from shore.

Was lucky to beat the skunk last night with this schoolie. Better than nothing!
