Re: H1 Spyderhawks
Just found this thread today. Been dying to get a Spyderhawk in PE for years. I love my Spyderhawk in SE and carry it everyday as a lineman but like all SE it is a pain to sharpen even with a sharpmaker. My job dulls the knife quickly and a PE just makes sense. I have lost two Tasman’s because they are so small that the handle flips out of my uniform pants. I was so ecstatic to see there was a new run of Spyderhawks only to be let down so hard hearing that they will be SE ONLY! Arrrggghh!

Hi Redhawk,
Welcome to our forum and sorry for your disappointment. Plain edge hawkbills don't sell very well and we have to make larger amounts in production. I guess I'll hide-n-watch to see if there is demand. We were asked for this version and we're making a batch. Hopefully they won't sit on the shelf for 3 years?

Re: H1 Spyderhawks
When you sharpen a SE hawkbill you do not need to follow the curve of the blade. You sharpen it like a wharncliffe. Run it along the corner of your sharpmaker stones and it'll be sharp pretty easily.Redhawk1369 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 19, 2018 9:31 pmJust found this thread today. Re: H1 Spyderhawks
Like the guys just told you there are efficient and not so difficult ways of sharpening Spyderco's serrated blades. The Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker is a good option along with some other sharpening tools out there. Spyderco once had a tool they sold called the 701 Profile kit. It's my favorite for sharpening Spyderedges. So don't let that put you in a bind.Redhawk1369 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 19, 2018 9:31 pmJust found this thread today. I also wish you a welcome to the Spyderville Forum :) Stick around you might learn something that you will be glad you did learn about. It does interest me as to what you use the Spyderhawk for in your lineman's job??? I also find the Harpy model to be a great Hawkbill for work. I agree with Sal that there are a lot more uses for a serrated Hawkbill than there are for a plain edged Hawkbill.

Re: H1 Spyderhawks
Thanks for the responses! I have been on the forum before but lost access to my old username/email. (I remember talking to Sal about the Kerrahawk). No worries Sal, I just put in my pre-order for the sprint run even if it isn’t what I hoped for and may buy more than one if they make it past the initial preorder. (I LOVE spyderco...period). Vivi, I do have the sharpmaker, and I can get it sharp, but i just believe a PE would be quicker to run across the sticks every few days. JD, to clarify I am a lineman for a large telco company. I use my Spyderhawk daily for cutting muletape(nylon rope) and often for plastic cable ties. Occasionally I use it for stripping insulation back and for cutting through plastic inner ducts but that really dulls it fast. I am obsessed with having a knife that is sharp and cuts cleanly, thus my dislike of the SE. just wondering if anyone has the BYRD CROSSBILL? It doesn’t look like as graceful a curve but thought of trying one out.

Have you looked at a slipjoint "pruner" patterns
Re: H1 Spyderhawks
I am not opposed to plain edge hawkbills. Let's see what the reaction is on this thread, or maybe, Redhawk starts another thread on "what would be the ideal plain edge hawkbill"? Size, shape, materials, etc. For me, it was the Superhawk, which did not do well, probably because of the high cost. But I felt the decreasing radius offered greater performance.
I've got a new design that using a wharnie blade shape in-the-works. It might do well with a hawkbill?

More info! FRN? Grip style? Is it the Wharnie Endura?I've got a new design that using a wharnie blade shape in-the-works. It might do well with a hawkbill?
Re: H1 Spyderhawks
I think FRN and lower cost steels work well for hawkbills, since they're generally carried in addition to a more conventional blade. It's easier to shell out the $$ for carbon fiber and other high end materials on the primary knife, I'd imagine.sal wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 4:49 pmI am not opposed to plain edge hawkbills. I really liked the blade shape on the superhawk but opted for the lighter and cheaper Spyderhawk & Tasman Salt. Weight is another consideration when it comes to companion blades.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Re: H1 Spyderhawks
I do love the Superhawk and Superleaf designs Sal. A Supersheep (foot) or Wharnie would be fantastic in that open pillar handle.sal wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 4:49 pmI am not opposed to plain edge hawkbills. Re: H1 Spyderhawks
To set the record straight I have had threads in the past asking people what they used their plain edged Hawkbills and plain edged Reverse S blades for. Sad to say I didn't get a lot of responses on any of the 3 threads I started on those subjects
Because even though I do own a few PE Hawkbills I use Spyderedged Hawkbills at least 20 to 30 times more than I do PE Hawkbills. I even have one of the older plain edged, blue handled VG-10 Spyderhawks that I won on an ebay auction used way back in 2004 or thereabout. But I could probably count the times I've used it by the number on my shoe size
I really would like to see what a Spyderhawk would be like in Combo Edge. Because I believe that the Spyderhawk is big enough to make a Combo Edged Hawkbill and it be useful.

Re: H1 Spyderhawks
for the money it costs, get one! :pRedhawk1369 wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 1:46 pmjust wondering if anyone has the BYRD CROSSBILL? It doesn’t look like as graceful a curve but thought of trying one out.

Even if it's for light use like mine (trimming flowers and plants at home) it's worth trying out to get the feel of a G10, solid and sturdy Hawk in the bigger blade sizes

and the steel is good and easy to maintain and repair if you cut something below those nylon bands or lines that you shouldn't have hit :D
Even with a coffee mug you can touch up 8Cr13MoV

Re: H1 Spyderhawks
You've got my attention. I like grips with strong index choils that lock your hand in place for pull cuts, since that's really what hawkbills do really well. Something like a Manix 2 handle or similar to how the Street Beat has the one prominent index finger groove would be outstanding with a hawkbill.

Re: H1 Spyderhawks
This sounds interesting!! But I'm wondering if it has a thick spine and a full flat grind>> which I think those factors would make for a great Hawkbill blade. But please!!?? make it in Spyderedge!! OH by the way? How long of a blade are we talking about with this one? Because we have more than enough Harpy, TASMAN, Merlin sized Hawkbills at this time I believe.Evil D wrote: ↑Wed Mar 21, 2018 2:00 pmYou've got my attention. I tried calling them but they're not open yet. It let's me add them to my cart. I'll try back in 20 minutes and I'll edit this post with the results. Really hoping this is in stock.
Spyderco shipped them so they should receive them in a few days. Not currently in stock

Re: H1 Spyderhawks
I wouldn't get too excited because I can't tell you how many times that "Oso Grande" has listed knives that I've wanted only to discover that they are either out of stock or haven't gotten it as of yetkoenigsegg wrote: ↑Wed Mar 28, 2018 12:02 amThe orange spring is showing up as in stock. And Oso Grande isn't the only internet knife dealer that is guilty of that type of neglect or oversight. That's why anymore there are only two extremely reputable dealers I take seriously at all

OK well that's why I didn't say to buy them. Like Vash said they've shipped from SFO so it's only a matter of time
