I thought the original dessert warrior was hilarious I bought a few of them as gifts, kept one for trade even. The wiener warrior also gets a chuckle from me. Where I thought they jumped the shark was $350 dessert warriors from MT and others.

I can understand the popularity of OTFs from a cool/fidget factor, but I would never seek one out as an EDC knife, even if I could legally carry one. Similar to any other automatic, or even assisted-opening knives; there's more that can or will potentially go wrong. The more complicated the mechanisms, the more there is to foul up or wear out. IMO.

...and the blades are (by necessity) pretty small.

for me a knife is fun to fidget with 5-10 times....then I'm over it. So I'd never keep something in the collection for that reason alone.
otf's seem to pack up nice and slim, but for me that's the only pro, while there's a wealth of cons. expensive, complicated, easy to draw negative attention to yourself, generally poor ergos, etc.

I have a combat troodon otf, it's pretty nice, super strong spring and lock up, big enough you might even like it vivi. Definitely not the best EDC's from a maintenance standpoint. That said I've seen the torture test videos, you can use it hard. It appeals to my inner teenage mall ninja. It makes me smile when I fire it open.

The DUMBEST knife trend EVER since the invention of knives and the development of trends?
I know no one here is a fan of this trend, but in practically every home, workshop, and pocket is a knife with the most common characteristic of all knives everywhere. The popular trend? DULLNESS! Why don't people just get a Sharpmaker, EdgePro, or flat stone off the beach? Sharp knives are so EASY to make... and they make life SO much better.

About a decade back, I bought a Victorinox paring knife on sale at a now-defunct cooking supply store for around $5. One of the best knife bargains I ever experienced. It's going strong today.
Over on BF, I read a post where some guy said he uses Victorinox paring knives. But because they're so cheap (inexpensive), when one starts geting dull, instead of resharpening it, he tosses it in the trash and buys a new one.
I don't know if that guy was BS-ing, or if he really did that. If it was the latter, it was the stupidest thing I've ever read on a knife-related forum. The Vic paring knife (and all their knife blades) take literally seconds to restore the edge on the Sharpmaker white rods.

They do make sense when You need absolute onehandedness, without any need for looking at the knife or changing the grip much and basically no risk of cutting Yourself or dropping the knife while closing it. They also don't pose any risk of closing the edge on Your fingers if the lock fails (and the OTF lock is crazy strong on top of that).
Not that I need any of that, I just like the snickt-snickt every now and again ^^

I don't get why almost every production knife nowadays has to be done with high end alloys as blade steel. Sure, it sounds cool, may have slight performance advantage when heat treated + sharpened + used correctly in comparison to a low alloy steel, or something like N690.
Most companies use high end steels but don't do the heat treat and geometry right (Spyderco is a huge exception), which means that customer is paying more but does not get the potential advantage of these steels.
I would like to see much more standard steels with premium production knives, like 440C, N690, ... But I guess that is not cool enough.
Imagine having a Spyderco PM2 in N690. You could easily use your Sharpmaker rods or similar for sharpening to achieve full potential. Won't work with S30V and higher grades (I do own f.e. a 15V Shaman which I love, but I would love it even with steels like LC200N, N690, etc.).
Using these high end alloys is not for real world use, but for image, cool kids and premium feelings

The majority of spyderco’s models made with frn handles. But I understand it’s because they’re relatively low cost to manufacture, they sell well, and majority of folks here seem to not mind it. I don’t need super lightweight, and definitely don’t need the majority of knives in it. I like g10 better especially for the surface texture difference, and appreciate the fact they still produce a fair portion of their knives with g10, but at the same time I wish I could get a model I like from spyderco nowadays with more old school materials and finish work. Steel, bolsters, wood, micarta, bone etc. the bright saturated colors with the bi texture molded plastic gives the knife a toy-like aesthetic, personally. I care about function-of-design first but I almost equally care about the overall aesthetic, and I’m just heavily biassed to that certain feel amongst knives.

I'd be all about some 440C spydies, especially if it meant saving 15-20% vs S30V models.
