Forum Knife... Some (Limited) Info
I'm definitely in for 1 but if it's a model I really like; then I'm in for the limit of 2. Can't wait to find out what it's going to be
CF Balance, CF Caly3 ZDP, Caly 3.5 SB, CAT 440C, Chaparral, Orange Jigged Damascus Delica, Blue Jigged Damascus Delica, BRG Delica ZDP(SOON TO BE G-10!), FG G-10 DragonFly, Gayle Bradley, 2012 Jester, H1 Ladybug Salt Hawkbill w/G-10 scales, Tan Manix 2 M4, MoonGlow Manix 2, C22CF Michael Walker, BRN Millie XHP, Native 5, PM2, All Black PM2, Gray PM2 20CP, Blue PM2 M390, Sage 1, Sage 2, Sage 4, Terzuola, CF Stretch ZDP, UKPK Drop Point
Yeah but remember that Sal and Co. watch the forums and alot of times we get what we ask for. So if a bunch of peeps ask for a minimum post count rule, they might make it happen. So I think thats what the yelling and whining came from (including myself) :pJNewell wrote:Lots of worry and words about something Sal, Kristi and the Spydercrew have never said anything about... :)
I'm glad there will be a limit of 2 at the beginning. That way more of these will get into more peoples hands and hopefully there won't be the disappointment like the last one. Sort of ruins the mood since the forum knife is suppose to bring in good spirits here. Just my humble opinion.
Now the exciting part of waiting to see what it's going to be.

I hear you. I'm probably going to pass on this one. I can't even look at my purple Native without being reminded of the negative and unpleasant forum experience associated with that knife. Not something I care to go through again.angusW wrote:I'm glad there will be a limit of 2 at the beginning. Personally, I'm hoping for an unusual knife... a spyderco knife, if you will. You know, one that looks funky, but performs crazy well? Dodo seems to be a good one... and also, I'd love that scale color combo we were discussing in another thread, about the red black and silver to match the spydie box?

It sounds like the Spyderco crew has everything in hand, but here is an idea to make sure everyone gets one. There are 2 opposing forces at work.
1. The need to satify all the forum members.
2. The need to make sure all the knives get sold.
Since the forum knife most likely does not appeal to the general public not involved in the forum, there probably is a significant concern of overproduction.
The Solution:
Choose a model with blade steel and handle color/material that is highly desirable, similar to a sprint run. Produce an amount that would for sure meet the demand of forum members, say 800 to 1000 units. Fully manufacture all the knives except for the inscription on the blades. Take about 300 knives and put the fancy forum inscription and design on the blade. Hold the remaining knives for later without anything on the blade. After about a week or two, Spyderco will be able to gauge the true demand.
If demand is high, Spyderco can take a portion of the remaining blades, add the forum inscription and sell to the remaining forum members who did not get one of the initial 300 and still want one. At the point demand is met, the remaining blades can be stamped with the standard Spyderco inscription and sold to the general public. As mentioned above, if the knife is a desirable model, they all should be sold fairly quickly.
This method will both meet the demand of forum members and guarantee a minimum of unsold knives.
Of course, I have no manufacturing experience whatsoever, so there is a good chance I have no idea what I am talking about.
Yuuuuuup, exactly.jackknifeh wrote:You are probably aware of this but I think the limit of 2 or 3 per person or whatever is just to keep someone from buying a bunch of knives just to sell them later at a much higher price to people here (and elsewhere I guess) that wanted one but didn't get one because they were all gone (because someone bought gobs of them). I see nothing wrong with buying and selling to make a profit but in this situation I think it's just rude.

Great ideas, 26.2 Madness. Also as Deathbysnoosnoo suggested, you could have a pre-order with pay in full to get a number and then26.2Madness wrote:It sounds like the Spyderco crew has everything in hand, but here is an idea to make sure everyone gets one. There are 2 opposing forces at work.

use this number as a guide to have an inscription added with number count or whatever. Then X number could be added to this for those
that missed the pre-order or later decided to get another one.

How many forum knives are usually made? Would Spyderco make another run of them if they sold out really fast? Maybe one of the "collectable" features of a forum knife is not having many floating around in the world. To me that's not all important but it is kind of cool to have a knife that there aren't many of. The grail in that issue would be to have a custom, one of a kind knife. But, even though that would be REALLY COOL, I don't see my financial situation changing so that kind of cost would be justifiable (for me anyway).
Is a forum knife a variant of an existing model or a brand new entity?

This has in fact already been done. 2003 blue Native forum knife went similar to this pattern you describe. The over run without the forum inscription were sold later & I own one of those cleanskins, a collectors item in their own right. I also think that they exist in lesser numbers than the forum knife proper.26.2Madness wrote:Choose a model with blade steel and handle color/material that is highly desirable, similar to a sprint run.
