I think this is a Dekay Brown Snake . Looks like correct size for adult 1 1/2 foot and color looks to match . I could be wrong though , will wait for the master of critters to confirm . Dan

I think you're correct Dan, it looks like a Dekay's Brown snake. The markings on the head are distinct.

It's always a treat to see them and the population seems to be healthy in that general area.
I often see them in the rocks when I'm fishing the Cape Cod canal. Funny story... Last I was fishing at one of the jetties and when I wasn't looking, a mink tried to sneak up through the rocks and steal one of my freshly caught mackerel. I had to chase him off a couple times before he got the message.
_______
I just spent a few days visiting family in South Carolina and the wildlife was abundant.
Started one of the days out by catching this beautiful Green Anole to show my nieces. I think he was posing for this photo when we let it go.
Couldn't find an exact ID for this moth but it looks like something from the Notodontidae family.
Then I went to a disc golf course and managed to dodge the thousands of these giant Golden Silk Orb Weavers strung across the trees...
Went out at night to go gecko hunting with my nieces and we saw tons of these Carolina Metallic Tiger Beetles running around.
Actually the first thing we found was this pair of Striped Walkingsticks. These walkingsticks are crack shots with their acidic defensive spray. Best to avoid handling them.
Then we found another pair
and another
and one lonely little guy who couldn't find a date
And no gecko hunt is complete without catching some invasive Mediterranean House geckos
The geckos were released unharmed but just not before a thorough visual inspection by my nieces.

Great shots Nick . This year so far no Walking Sticks or Mantis in landscaping. I usually transport the Mantis if near Hummingbird feeders hunting bugs . A Mantis is a Hummingbird’s greatest fear . Dan

Thanks Dan! I actually thought the walking stick was a Mantis at first, which I was excited to find. The walkingstick was cool but I definitely would have preferred find a mantis.

I believe this is a Eastern Rat Snake . I was in backyard cleaning up limbs from thunderstorm and noticed it coming up from hillside . He wasn’t thrilled to see me ! I caught him and released him farther down the hillside where I see a lot of Ground Squirrel activity. This one was around four foot long but not very mature . Dan
