Jay,
I am sorry, but this is not correct. I learn my lesson in the summer of 2006, even before you joined the forum. It was summer of sprint delica ZDP. ZDP used to be hotter than M390 or any carpenter steel. Quite a few forum member, including me placed pre-orders a little late and were not able to buy knives from the first batch. People who got the knives were making comments that these Delicas cuts like lightsabers and we were dieing jealous. I was stunned to see some respectable forum members (they are not active anymore) selling these Delicas on BF and asking more than double. Since than I am placing pre-order with the same dealer as soon as I hear and I didn't miss any knives, which I wanted. But selling :spyder: with profit as I see always was.
Roman,
My bad, I didn't mean to suggest that the act of flipping Spydies is something new, I was trying to say that I feel that the tone of the forum, as it pertains to flipping, in my opinion, as of late, is different. Sorry for the confusion. I realize that it has always been going on but feel that people today are perhaps more outspoken about the subject than in years past.

I feel like Spyderco's rising popularity is bringing new members and the question is just getting asked more. Normally when it comes up though I feel like the response is the same, although normally not for 10 pages.

This seems to be the most popular beating a dead horse topic of all, no mater the knife forum you are on,lol.
I've heard all of this for so long I no longer have any feeling about the topic one way or the other. A few years back I would give the flippers a hard time over on BF(mainly Busse flippers), but I've now realized it's not worth worrying about(to me anyway). It is what it is, and always will be.
I have sold one sprint for more than I gave. I've also bought at least 6 or 7 Spyderco's that I paid a good bit over the price they were sold for. In each case I was very happy to get them, even at a higher price.
BTW-If anyone has a Para2 CF S90V they can sell me(at original cost, or even $40 over cost) just send me an email, lol.
I'll also add that time has a lot to do with it. One example...For instance I still have 9 stag Case Trappers I bought in 1976,77, and 78 while I was in a knife club back in High School. I paid about $17 to $20 for each back then, but there is no way I would sell those for that now.

When does a topic become beating on a dead horse?

Being a knife hoarder, I almost never sell one. But I've got no prob with folks who sell Sprints or any other knife at a profit. For every person who sells at a profit, there is someone who is willing to buy at that price. I'm hoarding several sweet Spydies that I could flip - CF Militaries, G10/Ti Military, orange and brown Militaries, etc. I've never sold one yet, but I would have a clear conscience doing so. Heck, Mr. Sal is selling Spydies at a profit so why the heck shouldn't I? :)

Because he made them?
Also, as has been mentioned earlier it's the intent. If you buy because you want the knife and sooner or later decide it's not for you, well....
But buying multiples with the intent to profit immediately or much later is kinda crappy by my lights.

People buying multiple sprints just to sell are lowlifes. They are not creating the knife but are reducing the amount of that particular sprint that will be available. Should something be done about it? Absolutely not. Gotta take the bad with the good. Personally flippers do not bother me as I usually get the sprints I want without any issue so I say keep on flipping. There are lots of things people do in life that I just shake my head but if they are not bothering me or mine then it's not my concern.

I buy my Knives for use, I do not collect, nor seek to turn a profit on my purchases. I do donate knives to good home however, and then I buy another :)

I have always bought at generous discounts and usually no more than two. I throw in sharpening for my lifetime or the knife's for no extra charge. I keep my favorites and sell the others at no price above msrp. Is this wrong in other's opinions? Your comments do matter. I currently have around 300 knives. I believe my participation in the knife market is helpful. Am I wrong? No matter good or bad, you're comments are appreciated. Maybe I'll change. At 66, I doubt it. Thank you.

If you put it up for auction, the person who wants it the most gets it. If you sell it below the actual value, the first person who stumbles across it gets it. Some of those people will love you forever and some will flip the knife and take the money that you left on the table. It's a free country and you can decide who you want to reward.

I'm not in the business of buying or selling knives. All of my knives are users and if I do find myself selling one it's only to fund something I feel I'll like more.

The thing that I don't like is, only the true Spyderco fans would ever consider paying the massive inflated prices for a certain sprint if they missed it, so they are the ones affected by these flippers.
On the other hand, do I feel it's wrong for people who are struggling to either feed their families, or pay the bills, to do it? Most definitely NO.
But, people saying that there is nothing wrong with it, and then saying it is exactly the same as charging massive amounts for water after a hurricane, that's just ridiculous.
At the end of the day, the saying posted earlier "hate the game not the player" pretty much sums up how I feel about it, but to each their own.

The difference between life & luxury is a terrible analogy.

so are the people that dont like somone selling a knife for a profit the same people that didnt buy one when they should have? now mad at the higher price?
i dont know about you guys but if im going to invest my $$ i atleast want my $$ back to break even or make a little.
im always looking for old school spydies for cheap prices to sell and make a few bucks, if you dont like it dont bid, stop blaming the seller that actually gives you a 2nd chance to own something you cant find anymore.
