I'd be fine with just about any of the steels mentioned. AEBL, Magnacut and M4 are all great choices. I think something budget friendly for the initial run makes sense, then go from there.

This is just a fantastic development. I love using Mules for myriad tasks around the house and in the woods. I would be down for two of these for sure - one to treat well and one to treat brutally, as I think I could find a variety of tasks for such a blade. My votes for material lean toward something hard and tough, with plenty of great ideas already mentioned. Running it in Magnacut like Al's first article seems like a great idea for the full run, since stainlessness and toughness are paramount on a blade that is likely to see a lot of outdoor use. Using either magnacut or magnamax would also be a great way to make sure that the run sells out, as both of those steels are hot as can be on the market right now.

And while I would be fine with the standard mule handle shape if that's the way this shakes out, I'm also absolutely for an extra half inch of handle - better purchase for us XL glove wearers, and a bit of room for an extended chopping grip for everyone... seems like an easy win.

Maybe something simple, make a run of SPY-27, material you already have, know how to optimize and is your already standard mule. Maybe make a run of 200 and see what happens, unless 200 is too small to cover cost.

as for steels, a Magna* SS version (or SPY27) and a cheaper non-SS (but tuff) steel makes sense.

I guess the "How many" is like the "If". Cheaper and faster has never been part of the Mule Team. Nor os selling a lot of them. I don't think I'd make 500.

I'm leaning to the longer handle,

BTW at 5'9", I'm hardly "big". I'm carrying a few extra pounds, but even that is going down.

I am all about this XL Mule making a full run. The steel mentioned is great, coarse MagnaCut and certainly MagnaMax would really trip everybody's trigger, even those that are not committed right now, would be all over this nasty MuleXL in MagnaMax.

The grip, the extra room from the added length of the grip would be great, but it's not a deal breaker for me, either way; I make this knife work.

I just want the knife, and why I ask Big Sal for the number he needs to make the run. I just think it would really be something of more than enough interest, if it wasn't right at Christmas. I might be wrong though.

I just need to know how many units he needs to keep the wheels greased, so to say lol. How many XL red and black boxes do we need lol. Speaking of those red and black boxes, we put this in a plain box would probably save a dollar right there lol.

Give us something to shoot at Big Sal, I'm a really great shot though, so be fair warned. Running from me is not a good thing lol. I can make that shot.

Dang, I was trying to post at the same time Sal lol. At 5'-9" or whatever the size, your knives always work amazing. Heck I even have some of the smallest of munchkin sized knives of yours and I love them all. Sure I like the bigger ones more lol.

Add on the extra to the handle then, heck these will sell, I just really think the Christmas bug is getting all the juice right now.

So your thinking on the steel for this big Mulie' is what? You make this from MagnaMax these will all sell so fast none of us here will even get one of those lol. The locals all buy them up like right now lol.

So, you want an outside investor? I can Grease wheels Big Sal!!! Not with the likes of who do this for a living, but, we can do this. I think it's a great time too. Winter all over, except here in Texas lol. They are saying we may hit like 81 degrees here for Christmas lol.

I'm outside in a t shirt myself today. Very moderate weather for Christmas week!

I'd be up for some sort of pre-order if that's something that would help get the ball rolling.

I like the sounds of this, especially if I got a chance to test a MagnaMax variation, though I'm not stuck on that. If not MagnaMax, perhaps it could be another steel that sold out faster than expected.

I'm wondering about the larger handle possibly allowing two options for the same knife. Option 1) Have screw holes that fit the existing handle kit with the steel extending for a 4th 'lanyard' hole at the end to allow for Option 2) longer handle for larger hands, but using all four holes for screws (and no lanyard hole).

If possible, this might allow using the larger knife with the existing handle kit until the larger handle could be built or purchased. Knowing the design is intended for the larger handle, I would not object too much if the end of the original handle kit was not an exact match to the steel edges as long as the hole position made it usable on a temporary basis. But, if the design allowed it to still look nice with the existing handle kit, it may make a longer term solution for those with normal/smaller hands. Or, it may just give 3rd party makers an option for both regular and large handle sizes to more closely match the steel shape of the larger knife.

Not sure what my 2 cents are on the handle though, kinda wanna say KISS and don’t change it. On the other hand, this blade will be more of an outdoor use (or heavier chopping indoor) and won’t be an “edc” knife, unless you edc in the woods every day. Bit larger handle would make wearing gloves easier. Think I still lean leave the handle the same, could always make another run with larger handles. Need to handle the mules with gloves on now and think about that.

With enough interest could maybe make a second run with spy27 for the straight spine connoisseurs? Would stay consistent with the offerings for the regular mules.

Think the first run does call for a tougher steel, magnacut would sell more, and be easy enough to source, but the right hardness aebl, or nitro-v would be fun too.

We can always figure out handles and sheaths though, I’ve got enough paracord to wrap plenty of mules up, just need more to wrap and things to cut

At this time, I'm inclined to just create a new handle with the holes adjusted for the difference. It would be a small difference, but there. My thinking at this time is to just create the new handle shape and let the handle makers do their thing. We're pretty busy to be messing with handles and sheaths at this time in the developmental process.

This is in fact just a test. If "we" can nail down a design that we think will work, and there is enough interest in the final design, My usual, "I don't know, let's try it a see what happens"? takes over. We may only end up making one run, but that's OK. I've been using mine quite a bit, and it's a nice convenient "all around" cutting tool.

if you can make a 6 inch mule with the same kind of blade shape as the standard mule but longer in magnacut or magnamax sign me up i would love that handle holes holes arent that big of a deal for me since ill probably make the handle myself but i could easily see this becoming one of my favourite edc knives

Definitely interested. My 6-inch knife is a brute for outdoor work, but it isn't much of a slicer. I'd love to have a 6-inch all-rounder, and the Mule quickly became my favorite 3 to 4 inch fixed blade.

simple cardboard box for shipping works for me - if it helps any.
new holes for scales is fine by me - will probably 3DP the scales in PETG.

Very interested in magnacut, missed the original mule. Then make the next one in 3V

I'm interested in 2 or more of the XL mules.

Prefs: Curved spine. No swedge. Steel: something tough since a bigger knife may take more abuse.

I make my own handles and would really like a larger grip as long as the holes stay the same size.
