I thought the tip of the Chief was fragile until I compared it to a Military 2, they're nearly identical up until the shape of the spine changed and by that point you're past the point of it being thin enough to call it fragile. This seems especially true for the Military 2 which seems to be ground thinner than the Military 1. Maybe this just means the Military 2 has a fragile tip too?
knife tips are only fragile when they aren't treated as knife tips ;)

never broke a chief tip, catcherman tip, military 1 or 2 tip, etc. been carrying them for decades.
May you find peace in this life and the next.

Not for poking holes, but a thin tip passes through material more easily than a thick tip. It's something I appreciate as a whittler. I considered posting "yet somehow I've never managed to break one of those fragile tips" but as you say, it is a real concern for those concerned. I have managed to snap the tip off a Cold Steel Tanto, and not by prying, so I know broken tips are a reality, but if something that stout can break off, anything can, so why worry about it?

Zhylas right though, the Spyderco answer to this problem is the Z-Cut. Then bring whatever pocket knife you like.
Oh yeah good idea. Need a sheath of some sort. Or improvise one out of cardboard.

Hello there, I’m a freshwater angler and have never had any problems with Spyderco S30V.
When I am in my boat I usually carry a Native 5 G10 in S30V. When I am wading with two/thirds of my body submerged I usually carry a Native 5 salt in LC200N.
Both knives have 0 blade play in my experience and both perform great. Also no rust whatsoever :)

@sal any idea when the serrated edge magnacut native chief will be available?

Are these available anywhere? I put in an order for one at Knife Center and have been waiting for my PE and SE Native Chiefs.

Time to build another Spyderco Expansion... ;)

Nationalknives had the se magnacut Chief when I visited their site a few days ago. From what I’ve found, the se models are easier to find than the pe models.

Spyderco offers the SharpKeeper edge guard. I've seen similar products from other brands as well. One of those should fit the Z-Cut.

The Waterway will never replace your chef's knife, but is a good length, has a thin enough grind, and works well enough on food. Finger guard may interfere on a board, but the blade is long enough to cancel that somewhat. No rust, and no blade play! 😎

Image

The plain old Military is probably my first choice for a folder. Negative edge angle works on a cutting board. Nice long blade for food, for a folder. Open construction, and dries quickly when you rinse it. No worries about rust if you get the salty or S110V versions.

Image

The Siren is a nice large EDC, but the finger guard tends to get in the way when cutting food on a board. With the wire-clip, it carries ok in-waistband. When you prefer not to advertise a knife in your pocket in public.

You should at least consider the Catcherman. It's a Salt, designed as a fishing knife, but it's excellent for food prep. I'd even say it's the best Spyderco folder for that task. Lightweight and slicey. I don't know if distributors are still carrying them, but they're available from resellers.

The magnacut Chief is my beach knife and also gets carried quite a bit when home.

Any play does not register with me but i am not looking per se. (nerve have noticed in normal use)

I am quite happy with it

The only tip I have broken was a PM2. Tip broke as I was being a dumb*** :grimace
Had spine ground to meet new edge ala a delica and still carry that knife all the time

All great knives, and although I really love the Stretch XL design, I really dislike H2.
My vote would go for the Magnacut Chief. I like the pointier tip over the pacific and it’s a great version of a Spyderco Backlock.

I really like the shape of the Siren, but it's been discontinued, and from what I recall, the G10's texture sounded like a pocket shredder.

Yesterday I received my Spyderco Native Chief in Serrated MagnaCut.

Beautiful knife! You have to see this knife in person to appreciate it. Pictures do not do it justice. These serrations mean business and this knife looks like it can cut!!!

Going to have to get a few of these knives.
