Incredible work, Sal, hope you know a lot of people do appreciate your efforts, even if not always spoken directly out loud.
I cannot agree more! The variety of designs, steels, and handle materials & colors is pretty amazing, so thanks to all at Spyderco for many great knives!

Thanks to Shawn too for all of your work on 15V - it's an exceptional steel!

Hi Shawn,

We have another run coming in. It's pretty amazing stuff. We don't know much after that. It's odd that a company capable of producing such a blend as REX-121, would not be able to cover costs? The folks that we know at Crucible are pretty smart people.

sal

Is Spyderco done with Rex 121 now? As far as I can see there are zero available anywhere other than the secondary market but they aren’t showing as discontinued. It wouldn’t break my heart because I have both although I’d buy another LW to keep as new.
I don’t think a second run has happened yet, or if it did I totally missed it.

Hoping we see it at Spyderco.com and there is enough they are not gone in minutes.

I’d be up for something with REX121.

What’s the best way to buy on secondary market? In case there is no second release? Are secondary prices hyperinflated?

Reddit. r/Knife_Swap. For the most part I’ve seen fair prices on REX121. Decided to go with Maxamet because I couldn’t wait but kind of regretting it from a knife nerd standpoint for example just saw a very lightly used Sage 5 LW in REX 121 posted for $180.

Even on eBay the secondary market seems reasonable. IMO, knowing these will not be made anymore they would fetch a high price. Maybe it’s low demand as not many people out there want or need something like this for everyday use.

Maxamet is awesome, I have a Para 3 and Native 5 in it. It holds an edge amazingly and is probably better for edc than rex121 because there is still a tiny bit of toughness to it. It’s in large part why I did not jump on the first batch but the collector side of me really wants one.

On the good side a lot of sites seem to indicate you can preorder them, so I guess we should see the final batch soonish.

Think I want the G10 as it has more of a quality feel. But I like my Para 3 LW better than G10 as on the Para 3 it’s a bit blocky vs the contoured FRN, hard choices.

Anyone have the Sage 5 in G10 and FRN that can provide feed back?

Is there much or any advantage to buying eBay rather than Reddit Knife Swap…? Other than familiarity with eBay? “Buyer Protection”?

I think I’d go REX 121 for pure edge holding, over Maxamet. At that end of things, I figure toughness is long gone, haha. What hardness does Taichung get the REX 121 up to? How good is the heat treat?

No comment about LW vs G10… Have never held any Spyderco LW in my hand.

Not sure on the hardness but Spyderco does some of the best heat tray out there. I could totally be making this up but I thought I read Shawn may have had some input on it.

Sal has tested one for a bit and thinned out the edge, down to 13° or 12° per side if I remember correctly with good results. He said there were no issues even at that extreme angle. Maybe/hopefully @sal can add some additional thoughts on REX121 as I am just going off memory.

I think I remember him saying that he was testing it even down to 10 deg there for a hot minute. I wonder if he could provide some feedback for how that went.

I have the Rex-121 G10 version. Nice knife. Were these getting hard to come by? I didn't specifically look for them last time I was at the SFO, but the other times they definitely had them there. When I talked to the sales guy there, specifically for the run of Spy 27 Bodacious knives, he said they would put some online for sale, and have some in the store stock for sale. So if you don't see any on their site, you could try calling the SFO and just asking if they have any and they might be able to hook you up. Regarding prices, I know MSRP on these is like $400 or so, but I've seen the $250/$300 typical pricepoints on these. Worth a call if you are looking for one.

Thanks for the heads up, online they have been hard to find. Back in January Sal said on this tread they would be doing a second run. Most recently Sal also said REX121 would probably not be made anymore as crucible had some of the only equipment that could make it. This may be the last run we see for awhile if not ever on a production knife.

I have a hard time leaving knives in storage so I understand your thoughts on Maxamet vs REX121 for edc. However, engineer side of me wants to get my hands on some of the Crucible-only steel before it’s gone for an undetermined period. Might invest in 15V, though, as it fits my use case a little better and sharpens amazingly well.

Tried calling the store to see if they had a few in stock but not posted online without luck. Just have to see how well that “Notify Me” option works on the new website.

I don't have a Sage 5 in both G-10 & FRN, but I do have a Native Chief in both, and also a Stretch 2 XL. Both the FRN Chief and S2XL have no steel liners in the handles, and I think this contributes to the imbalance I feel with the FRN versions (especially with these larger blades). I MUCH prefer both knives in G-10 (so much so that I might sell the FRN versions).

Having said the above, I think the larger the blade, the less I like FRN handles (esp. without steel liners). I carried a Native with FRN grips for many years (one of the old Walmart specials, prior to the FFG Natives), and I still like that knife and carry it occasionally. The Sage is not much bigger than the Native, so I would probably be ok with an FRN Sage (although I think I would still prefer the G-10 Sage at least slightly). To me, G-10 looks and feels better than FRN (although the G-10 on the Bodacious is too smooth for me). We all have at least some different likes and dislikes, which is why Spyderco has so many different models and model variations (and that's a good thing). :smiling-cheeks

Yep, bout 45min from the shop.

Ironically enough, I went today over lunch, but totally forgot to look for Rex-121 Sages! D'oh! But, I did spend some time at the 'Taichung' cabinet and I don't recall seeing any orange handles. I will ask if they have an ETA next time I'm there.

EDIT: Funny story - I brought a co-worker w/ me and we were looking at some of the slightly larger knives, including the Shamans. One of the guys there asked one of the other ones to grab his Shaman. He pulls it out of his pocket, and it is the brand new REC exclusive 10V w/ snakeskin micarta handles. It was nice! I asked him "So, these were hard to get, I think they sold out in about 6 hours. How did you get yours?" And he just sorta looks and me and casually says "Well, I got it right here...I, uh, work for Spyderco." We all had a good laugh about that one!
