Learned this lesson on the Magnacut N5 Salt. Waited forever for it to be released, then when it did start hitting shelves KC seemed to be the last to get it. Cancelled my order and bought somewhere that had them in hand, and that's the plan for everything going forward.

Just to be clear, many distributors like Knife Center or BladeHQ will list a knife as available for pre-order as soon as it's listed in a reveal catalogue by spyderco. This is a silly thing for them to do, as the spyderco reveals aren't associated with any public production schedules or timelines, so these distributors have no idea when the knives they're listing for pre-order will actually arrive. And it's normal for a knife to go >1 year between being listed in a reveal and entering production.
But I think many of the distributors feel market pressure to engage in this, because if they don't, they'll lose business to distributors that do.
I see it more as a problem caused by the distributors than by spyderco. Short of (1) improving their messaging on this issue so consumers are more aware, (2) banning this practice among distributors, or (3) requiring distributors to include a blurb that they have no idea when they're actually getting the knives they're listing for preorder, I don't really see what they could do. Having public production schedules and release dates for pre-production knives would also be a logistical nightmare, and would be antithetical to spyderco's approach to testing/validating pre-production knives and only releasing when they know they're ready. So I don't think that would be realistic either.
And I'm not sure whether or not Spyderco has the latitude to control this behavior by distributors, or if they'd want to if they could, since it is ultimately likely good for Spyderco's sales too.
But I'm sorry you're in this situation - we've seen this come up numerous times before, and it seems deeply frustrating to pre-order a knife and then find out months or even years later that it has no known release date.

BRK pre-order. Over a year. I haven’t even tried to find a forum for them.

It is in Spyderco's best interest to fill orders as soon as possible. It's how they make money. I am sure that is what they are trying to do.
Is this your third or fourth thread on this subject, I found 3? EDIT: Nope, 5 threads on the same subject.
I don't work for Spyderco, just another forum junkie and spyderco collector.

Ditto. I generally wait until new models are stocked. I had that issue with KC on a couple of preorders but now know better. The only knives I preorder now are exclusives.

I stopped doing preorders after locking money away and seeing other dealers get the thing I wanted. At that point you just hope your place gets enough stock to supply orders before the other vendors run out of knives.
IMHO, get your money back and sign up for a few wish lists.

Let me tell you about being a fan of the Metroid Prime and Elder Scrolls series....
Ha ha! Yeah, Metroid fan here. I heard Metroid 4 was coming out before my youngest sister was born, now she is like seven years old? But hey I'm happy, I'd rather they take the time to get it right, I just won't buyit till it's finished. Playing through Metroid Prime 1 re-mastered right now with my brothers.

True story here: I bought a part from Steyr and it took 7 years to get to me. I ordered it in 2017 and earlier this year I got a call from them saying it arrived.
Seven. Years.
What was it if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve been doing a little research lately on a L9-A2, so this or another CZ?
It was an very rare 9mm AUG barrel check nut. Rare because I was the only person who has ever requested the part in the USA. It’s an old barrel with exterior threading down the length of the outside of the barrel to the gas lock.
L9 a2? You’re good.

At that point, I'm impressed by their record keeping!

I've had the black and yellow PM2 Salt on preorder since November or October or whenever it was announced. Months afterward I encountered in this forum that KC is often among the last to get a given shipment. Now I'm just determined to be stubborn about it and stick with the pre-order with them. I just hope it drops before the summer/fall fishing season ends in the midwest. I am dying to lose it in the grass and be like - bam! There it is!

For me, it wasn't so much the long wait. It was the occasional email that said something like, "We still have your pre-order. We'll let you know when it is ready to ship." That annoyed me more than anything, so I canceled my pre-order. This was Knife Center. Again, they never took any money. So I don't think what they did was unethical or anything. I'm sure some people would complain if KC wasn't in contact about a pre-order. It's just that being reminded that the knife still wasn't out got old quick. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.

I've had about a dozen of these for a SE Bodacious. I took a shot, might get me one sooner than later but I also like that they don't charge anything so if they take forever to get them while everyone else already has them we can always cancel.

I don't think KnifeCenter is among the last to get their Spydie shipments. They're first sometimes... just like all the other Premier dealers. Spyderco seems to be pretty fair about this.
The catch is that you don't know how many orders were placed before yours. Combine that unknown with watching a knife drop at other dealers first and you've got an agonizing wait that can feel like an eternity.
However, you're all but guaranteed to get one and if the price has increased, you'll save a few bucks.
