Always helpful to see what people are carrying...Over the years doing SAR, EMS, etc. I've come down to this (kept in my 4x4)
Vest containing (not sure I remember it all...)
small first aid kit
2 aluminum rescue blankets
6-8 packs of water (Datrex rations)
6 individual packs Datrex survival rations
sewing kit
fishing kit
1 tube sunblock
whistle
Air Force signal mirror
matches in waterproof aluminum canister
Spyderco C14 Rescue --new replacement for old Buck knife
AAA Mag Lite
Emergency poncho
large plastic garbage bag
small bottle of water disinfection tablets
firestarters
Mil spec 2 AA powered distress beacon
Insect repellent
small energy foods (hard candy, etc.)
small folding hand saw
compass
small roll duct tape
cyalume lightsticks
Gerber 600 series multitool
Fixed blade survival knife
Think that's about it for that...also carry in the vehicle my Thomas Transport trauma pack, resuscitation bag, equipment box with more rations, utility ropes, tool kit, fire extinguisher, folding shovel, extra clothing and blankets, MREs, 2 D cell Mag Lite, and a food and water pack for my dog. (Can't forget her--wife would never forgive me. Can't forget wife, either).
When I hike (or if I had to bail) I usually carry my HK USP .40 Compact and 2 extra magazines or the Sig P229 9mm with 2 extra mags. What all I have with me depends on the situation. All sounds like a lot but it really doesn't take up much space by now.
