Heavier blades definitely swing more easily. My Voyager XL free swings with ease. In fact I can pop it open without touching the blade or stud, just using inertia from a wrist flick.

My Micarta scale Endura, Pac Salt and Endela are within reach right now... I can do what you describe with all of those, though just when I hold the knives in a grip like I´d hold a pencil (pivot end of the handle facing downwards)

I NEVER want a free swinging blade on a backlock. It can be dangerous and I prefer the pivot aiding the lock for stability when open. It reduces future blade play.

I feel the same about all folders to be honest. I like tightening the pivot until there's a touch of extra resistance.

Yeah I'm actually thinking about tightening the pivot on that new Pac Salt if it won't screw up the blade centering. The way I close my back locks with one hand, I put my index finger near the pivot end of the scales, then disengage the lock, then bump the blade forward so I catch the ricasso with that index finger. On a free swinging blade, if I don't have my finger exactly in the right position exactly when i disengage the lock bar, seems like the potential to slice my fingers goes way up.

I close my backlock Spydercos by placing my index finger in the hole, pressing the lock, and lowering the blade. Then I move my index finger to the spine and snap it shut.

I still want to see how people are flicking their back locks with their pinkies...

I do the same except I keep my index finger on the hole for the entire closing action. It's always felt a lot more intuitive and safer than swinging the blade down on my index finger then closing it how most people seem to do.

I need to practice that. One of these days I'll get a centofante and be basically ricassoless, so my usual technique would cost me a fingertip.

This is basically what I do, but sometimes put my thumb in the hole instead. Or, I’ll use my index finger in the hole and guide it to 60* and the put my index finger on the spine and snap it shut like a traditional slip joint. In any case, it is safer than getting into the habit of letting the blade fall onto my finger because if I use a different knife I might forget and get cut.

Well, after attempting this method on a delica and on a pac salt last night, I don't think that's the case for me with small hands. Especially on the larger knife, when it's open I can't reach the lock and the hole at the same without contorting my hand into an awkward position, so when I pull the blade down it's not very controlled and my other fingers are in the blade path. Maybe with practice I'll have more control this way, but as it is, that way feels a lot more dangerous to me.

If you are going to play/experiment with this,, use some masking tape on the blade edge.

My caly 3.5 would drop shut. Smoothest backlock i ever owned. Looking forward to the frn version

I really enjoy the feel of opening backlocks, and don't mind closing them. Probably my favorite lock type to open.
