Which is interesting to me.
If a $500 USA made knife and $500 Chinese made knife are using the same materials and tolerances, the profit margin on the latter is much, much higher.
Keeping that in mind makes it difficult for me to justify paying more than $50-75 on a Chinese made knife. Same way I have trouble justifying $200+ USA made knives. Aside from my Scrapyard Dogfather, I can't recall spending over $200 on any cutting tool.

I can't wait to buy this, honestly. I see a pretty good deal for what you get, and the blade looks amazing. I'll probably never get a shot at a full custom, so this works for me.

I guess Collaborations tend to be costly as they are generally a limited run and cost money to tool up for, have limited appeal/are for a niche market, more people to pay and so on
Material cost is there but materials really are quite negligible really in the scheme of things-
Like the difference between say S30v vs S35vn as a raw material would be peanuts- the difference on tooling however...

Holy moly. I was expecting the market value be around $400. Sheesh! Sad thing is, if I had that much laying around I'd buy it in a second. :D

The problem with a $300 knife for me, regardless of country of origin, is that is $100 more than I'm willing to spend on a knife.
I can find a cutting tool for any particular need of mine well below that. Custom bushcrafter, carbon steel chopper, hand made axe, custom kitchen knife heat treated to my specs, rust proof EDC folder, etc.
Being made in Taiwan wouldn't keep me from owning a knife.

I am with you on that, or I would own the Bradley Bowie. Which is made in Taiwan also, hmmm -- do I see a pattern?
As for being made in Taiwan, that is a badge of honor in the Spyderco world (and not a bad thing in many other realms).
Yeah, $200 is pretty much my ceiling for what I will spend on a knife, and it has to be pretty special even then, no matter
who made it or where.
Setting the whole Taiwan business aside, the OP does have a point. The Subvert is a monstrous liner lock knife with an S30V blade and a bright colored handle. It would be fun to own to frighten dogs and small children (or even adults!), but I'm not willing to bite at that price.

As crazy as it might seem I'm actually planning on buying one. It may end up being one of the only knives I buy this year but at least it'll be a good one :) .

To me, as far as Spyderco goes, I've long gotten past the skepticism of the quality of 'Made in Taiwan' models. So for me, the question is, would I pay $300 for that particular knife, wherever it was made. No, I wouldn't, because that model doesn't interest me. I would say the same if it were made in Golden.
The mindset that 'Made in Taiwan' equals subpar goods is an obsolete remnant from past decades.

Agreed. When the start of this thread leaves out that it's 3D milled G10 over a titanium liner lock with custom style pivot screws and has a 4.1" blade, yes I'm sure it seems expensive for what you get.
Whether anyone likes the way it looks or not is a separate question.
