I have a design for a Two Hand Opener that locks. A THO that does not lock would be a larger Roadie?

sal

Still very interested in this. Was hoping to see it.

Also, how about the one hander, the size between Urban and UKPK? I’m thoroughly enjoying my Urban K390 right now, and was thinking of this just today. Personally, I wouldn’t care for a 3.5ish one.
I was also hoping to see the THO design. I'm hoping Sal decides to show it off soon.

I wouldn't mind a 3.5 inch slipjoint, but I like big knives and 3.5 would be about the biggest I'd want so a 3 inch would be great. I think that's the sweet spot for a large slipjoint. I'd like something that size with the double dent and a blade shape like the byrd pelican or caribbean sheepsfoot. I really want to like the roadie, but I just can't warm up to the blade shape.

Since you asked for opinions, I would be fairly unlikely to buy such a knife. There are a lot of knives like this already, sodbusters, slimline trappers, etc. They have long blades, slipjoint action, and two-hand opening. They can be had in a wide variety of price, steel, handle material, country of origin, etc. They typically have thin slicey blades, acceptable ergos, and light weight. I don't think there is much room for Spyderco to improve, other than perhaps better ergos (which may make them larger in the pocket). The Opinel sort of falls into this category too, though it locks. But it also has nice ergos thanks to the thick handle.

I do think a one-hand-opening larger slipjoint, like a Stretch-sized UKPK would be interesting. I can't say for sure I would buy one, but having the same ergos, drop point blade, and size of the Stretch but with the lower weight, lower cost, US-made attributes of the UKPK would certainly be tempting.

Hi Jazz,

The Metropolitan was a 2.75" Slippie that was to use the DKPK handle, but we ran into some sizing problems in that the Urban, which was supposed to be 2.5" ended up 2.6" which was too close to the 2.75 Metropolitan. So we' have to reduce the Urban to 2.5" before we can make a 2.75" Metropolitan. But in discussion here, there was push back to making the Urban 2.5".

I've got THO lock-back. A 3.5" Slippie which is essential a 3.5" UKPK that looks like a Caly 3.5 without a lock. Now we've added a 3.5" THO Slippie, which i'm not sure there is a need for? If Canada will accept a THO locker, why do we need a THO 3.5" Slippie?

Do you think a case russlock style knife could be made NYC legal? Hard to flick open due to the spring, but there may be other issues. Or have a lock that requires a second motion, like an opinel ring?

I’d like the 2 hand locker. I don’t think the slippie is necessary.

Who knows what the deal is. There’s still a Canadian dealer getting Spydies in. I just acquired the Delica wharnie HAP40. Very nice, I might add. I’m sure they’re going after flippers mostly.

I’d still love one, but even if it doesn’t happen, the Urban really is a great little knife. Design genius.

Agreed. I'm amazed at what I can accomplish with my K390 version. So much knife for such a simple elegant design!
Great work Sal!

Sal, I think it breaks down like this:

THO lock back = need
3.5 slippie (one hand opener) = need
3.5 slippie (two hand opener) = don’t need

Sal, I agree with Cobra and I think Jazz. I'm incredibly excited to see the THO locking knife and the 3.5 slippie. I'm not super interested in the THO 3.5 slippie unless it is super interesting. If it was just a large Pingo or Spydk I would probably pass.

The 3.5” slipjoint wouldn’t be legal carry in the UK, but I’d still buy one!

Hi, Sal. Purely curious here. Did Spyderco reason that 2.75" and 2.6" were too close to the same length, and customers felt that 2.6" and 2.5" were too far apart?

Isn't it usually the case where, in areas that have laws against locking knives, there are also blade length laws too?

Absolutely. But in the case of this weird Canada knife ban, no. We don’t have length limits, but the CBSA doesn’t seem to want one handed locking knives to come in.
