Haven't decided yet. I have a modified Atlantic and Assist Salt that will serve me fine for now. I'm sure there's some interesting Salts on the horizon but I might pick up another Pacific for now.

You are not a fan of a boat tether/lanyard for your kayak knife?

Not on my folders. I keep a Jumpmaster in the side compartment and it is always tethered. The folder comes in and out of my shorts on launch and landing and is always sitting in the gunnel while I'm on the water. Not only does a cord get in the way while using, it can be a hazard. Imagine hauling one of these guy's over the side and he (or the hooks) gets tangled up with your knife cord. Now you have a 50 lb wild fish flopping around with a sharp knife connected to him. I know that might sound outlandish, but trust me, you are working in a tiny space with big animals and if something can go wrong, it usually does. The best you can do is try to limit the potential disasters. :)

The good news is, if I look at my track record, I only tend to lose one every couple of years. That's $35 a year to have an awesome working tool that I use everyday. I can live with that. Wish the rest of my fishing expenses were that cheap!

It pains me to hear about loosing a knife but I like your outlook :) ...$35 per year is nothing for what that tool provides you. Still, my first thought was...how deep? :p I'd have been tempted to try to go get it if I was at 30 feet or less...but my guess is you would be over deeper water to hook that huge rooster. All things considered....still looks like it was a pretty fine day! :D

Nice fish Lance :D Never caught a Roosterfish. If they fight anything like a large Jack Crevalle that bad boy probably took a bit of time to get in. The rod and knife can be replaced. The memory will last. Thanks for sharing the photo's.

Lol, I almost forgot about that. I think that was a millie but i'm not sure. I was using the sharpmaker and had an itch on my face. Went to scratch and stuck myself in the forehead with the tip. True story. It's all fun and games til somebody loses an eye. :rolleyes: :D

Just watched the vid. Near the end when you were trying to land him you can see where he lands on the rod just before going over the side. Terminal damage as the rod gets slammed against your kayak. IMHO opinion losing a PAC Salt and breaking a rod was well worth it to catch that Rooster. Some people wait an entire lifetime to catch a nice one like that. H8ll I woulda thrown my wallet over the side for that fish. :D

Meh, I appreciate the out, that's very kind of you. But we both know it broke because I was choked up so far and wasn't quick enough. :o That's one of the trickier aspects of landing bigger fish (non gaff) with light leader on the kayak. Can't grab the leader and there's nowhere to go with the rod and you are forced to choke up. As long as you are quick enough and drop the tip in those situations you're fine. This was the first one i've broken like that and I've done it a thousand times. Live and learn. :)

That fish was also just too big to handle by the tail. I gave it a go because I don't like grabbing the gill plate and risking damaging the gills. This one did fine though. Released her right after the vid and she swam away fat and happy (though probably a bit exhausted).

So anyway, back to knife related talk, you can at least see how my pacific salt might have gone awol during all the hubbub.

It happens. I've lost knives, Boga Grips, pliers, etc. in the drink...part of the game. I've also collected quite a few scars. Trade offs.
