The Rock Salt might be the "best" but it might not be the best to carry.

I'd think a salt of some sort, all depends on your Suit/ shorts, how big a knife to carry...sure wouldn't want to be caught in a speedo with say some Spyderco/Burch collaboration.

I'm gonna say it. Whale rescue obviously. Hands down probably spydercos most effective shark knife. I'd recommend carrying two on your back at all times.

Re: Best Bathing Suit Blade/Shark-Go-Away Spydie?
Well, this is a good post. I like posts like this, a lot.
Without getting into a side topic about super material suits and such, I would go for a serrated edge Pacific Salt, and it is claimed the gills and nose area is the most sensitive target zone to strike a shark: Those are their main sensing areas. But as others have said, they are super-stealthy and powerful, resilient creatures. I read of a WW2 US Navy man emptying an entire Colt .45 automatic pistol clip of bullets at point-blank range into the head/face area of one of the larger sharks (tiger, bull, or something like this)....and the shark shook it off, and kept on swimming around with little damage!
(ofcourse the water in the area of the downed ship may have slowed the momentum of the bullets, too)

By the way, from what I have studied and heard and such, it is a good idea to carry a knife, specifically a serrated-edge rust-resistant one, because it is more likely you will have to cut discarded fishing lines and other hazards than facing a shark. Would sea-savvy people here tend to agree with that?

^ YUP!
Been diving since I was 11.
Carried a beautiful Scubapro 8" recurve......I pulled it twice. Both times to cut line.
