Ah Scorpion. I will repeat Sal's mantra: Shiny footsteps, shiny footsteps, shiny footsteps...
To carry a knife is to accept damage. To use a knife is to accept responsibility for sharpening it.

I think we have a consensus here.

  • Get yourself a Sharpmaker.
  • This unfortunate accident is not the fault of Spyderco.
  • Sharpen the knife yourself or send it to Spyderco for resharpening.
  • Get a Sharpmaker.

Sharpen it up and carry on!

If you really can't stand to carry it like that, send it to me and I'll carry it for you. :)

Now she has character. I would take a bit of 400 grit or 600 grit and lightly sand the scratches areas just to remove any sharp burs. That way they don't snag fabric. The blade scraches/dings will sharpen out. I like it. You can tell it's a user.

Dude, you were running and your knife prob snagged on something came out, opened and fell to the ground. It happens. How could Sal or Spyderco make any money if he had to replace every knife that gets dinged up for various reasons? It's just a little bad luck, could happen with any knife. Sal, I dropped my centofante 3 on to concrete one day, due to it's somewhat slippery handle. Can I have a new one? :D

I can't remember exactly what it cost for repairs to my Lum--that was quite a long time ago. :o I do recall that the repair cost was quite reasonable (well less the cost of a new knife). If you decide to send it in, I believe they will provide you with an estimate before they perform any repairs. This will allow you to decide whether you want to have it repaired or not. As the others mentioned, I would certainly invest in a quality sharpener (can't go wrong with a Sharpmaker). Another option would be to try and mod it yourself. Or, there's a lot of guys here who might mod it for you for a fair price.

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, instead of accepting that your knife fell out of your pocket and that it's your own fault (not that you should be at fault for anything, just that it was your own doing), you are suggesting that your knife had four defects from the factory;

Defect A: the titanium was too soft which allowed it do be dinged and scratched
Defect B: the steel was not properly heat treated/hardened which allowed it to be damaged
Defect C: your detent was out of spec and too weak to hold the knife open properly
Defect D: your clip tension was too weak which caused the knife to fall out of you pocket

So Skorpion, which of these "defects" (if not all of them) do you believe your knife had?

My FRN Native got snagged on a piece of angle iron comprising the torsion resister I was climbing through (Narrow face width on that particular tower), and fell 275 feet onto gravel. It had opened half way after impact, though there was no edge damage visible to the naked eye (Gravel is preferable to pavement/concrete), and given the properties of FRN and the fact that individual rocks can shift when impacted reducing the impact very slightly, it barely made a mark on the corner where it landed. It could have landed in a less favourable manner (For example the wind could have caught it and blown it into the tower face and it could have smacked side to side bouncing off the tower rungs falling down through the center of the tower), but it was certainly not a defect in the design of the knife in any way. I now carry my folders tucked down into my tool pouch instead of clipping them to the outside edge of the pocket.

Scorpion, I have had knives open from drops with probably less impact/momentum than yours had. It's not uncommon.

I'm with the majority and think it's a user caused accident and in no way, shape or form is it defective.

Good luck getting a resolution that is satisfactory to you in whatever way needed. Personally I have used knives much, much worse, worn and uglier than yours and would have jumped at the thought of having what you do in the condition it's in. ( trying to help you maintain perspective but don't think it's working. :) I'll shut up and sit down. :o )

I've had several folders open when hitting the ground. It they hit a hard surface the right way the knife flips open (not a defect)

Ti is softer than steel, no surprise it dinged. With the tip and edge hitting rocks you will also have to expect slight damage.

Clip retention and stiffness is a trade off between ease of use and retention. I haven't had an issue with my Techno, but if wearing trousers or shorts in thin fabric retention might not be as good.

Just use it and love it, the scratches don't matter at all..

Bottom line: I would really appreciate it if Sal is willing to exchange it for me if I send it in, since I feel that there were manufacturing defects in play here...

Alright guys, I think I may end up sending it to Golden for reprofiling/buffing. I still would love it if someone who's done his before could offer a dollar estimate since I would like to just send cash with it as Canada-USA payment transfers SUCK.

Looks like it is $20 for repairs, $5 for sharpening.

I don't see anything about buffing/fixing dents. Do you still think they can do that and include it in the $20?

I have dropped many a knives (luckily usually on carpeted floors) and the first thing I do is get my feet out of the way! I know that thing is popping open, and bouncing where ever it pleases. Not at all surprised about the Ti doing what it did, the blade damage kind of surprises me, but crazy things happen, and if his managed to lock open while bouncing around, then the now rigid knife is more likely to incur damage to the edge. Bad luck is all I can say. Sharpen her up, and maybe try to knock any sharp corners off the Ti.

Bad luck! There's always a transition from "new" to "used", but most often that's a slow, gradual process! I think we all must have favoured things that have wandered far from the pristine, but the real point is that the good stuff keeps going, working well, whereas the rubbish dies and is disposed of.
Look on the bright side - you don't have to worry about scratching it now. If it was a showpiece, or jewelry however, maybe you should have left it at home? Asking for a free replacement is a little unrealistic but no doubt done in the depths of dispair - I would be pretty gutted too.

I missed the stuff below your pictures last night when I read your post.

There are absolutely no defects at all here. No clip is secure and in any case you've changed the clip. Knifes *DO* open when dropped and may lock.

The assertion that there are manufacturing and design defects here is frankly outrageous.
