most variations for the Police came out in the "youth" of the model, now we're on Gen 3 the oldest are tough to come by. even more in new condition. PIG, almite, Alu, CF are very rare. you have a good illustration in yablanowitz's picture.
same thing for the Military. a spyderco forum Military just sold for over 1000$ on e*ay...
as for the Para1/2, the CF S90V is selling for 600$ nowadays...
I won't tell the guy who sold one recently for $ 300 here then :O .
I've got all but the blue tenacious as it got pulled before it got here .
And have decided to do the matriarch series as I have 1/3 already :D .
I'd love to do the ladybug AAA torch thing but it'd be costly here .
(Is there not an emoticon ) that shows a banging drum ;) .

Worse, really. At least flippers still allow the hard core users a chance to own one more beater, albeit at an inflated price. Once a knife finds its way into my display case, it's gone forever. :p

I've made some modest progress on Manix2s, PM2s and Stretches, but I only feel compelled to have the entire Sage family so far. If the Native5 presents other steels besides S35VN (have it) and S110V (will have it), then that family will attract me as well.

I don't really consider the Mules and Sages as something I collect, although I have full sets of both.
I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

Not always. I managed to extract a Dyad from that case. Granted, I did so by replacing it, but still...

Not 100% true, I anticipate some of my knives will show up again on forums in 15-20 years when my son starts using them and learing to appreciate the history of knives from my days.

I'm a sucker for Delicas, Calypos/UKPKs and as was already noticed, I like ladybugs/jesters (old picture):

Schempps for me! I also have all Para 2 sprints and exclusives, and all Sages so far. Looks like I probably won't continue a complete Chaparral collection though.

Who says collecting and using are mutually exclusive??

Schempps so far. Still need the Equilibrium and a SS Balance.

You seem to be operating under the false premise that collecting and using are mutually exclusive. I have a decent sized collection and I also use most of it. I know you weren't targeting anyone in particular, but you cast a pretty wide net by insinuating that those of us who collect some of the knives are merely doing it to flip for profit. On the contrary, I'll bet most of the collectors who frequent and contribute to the forums here love the knives they collect and do so out of interest for the hobby, and not for the financial gain from flipping.

I collect the Swick/SPOT family. Sadly, my collection is lacking.

The Schempp Rock will likely be my next fixed spyder but I wish they would've made the same grind on the Rock as the salt .
It looks so much better and from pou I can't see where the H1 steel grind would be better suited to the steel than the grind on the Vg10 Rock ?.
Maybe somebody could give reason , all this talk of Butt hurt and back and forth not good guys :D .

As I understand it, Spyderco only hollow grinds H1. Something to do with the work hardening making flat grinding almost impossible (someone else can probably explain that better). Also, I remember Ed Schempp saying the Rock was originally designed with the flat grind, but had to be changed to the hollow grind to accommodate the H1 steel. The VG-10 Rock has the grind that was originally intended.

H-1 work hardens as it is ground. Flat grinding is done on one side at a time. If you grind one side of H-1, it has gotten a lot harder when you grind the other side. That can cause overheating, warping and uses up abrasives like they were free. Hollow grinding is done on both sides at the same time, so the work hardening progresses at the same rate on both sides of the blade.

Yes, H-1 can be flat ground, but it is relatively time-consuming, making it impractical for mass production. I also recall the hollow grind on the Rock Salt being a change made to facilitate production and the flat grind of the Rock being what Ed intended for the model.

Thanks for the info makes sense on a practical level .
Aesthetics alone I prefer the Salt Rock although as the last two replies stated , it would probably negatively affect performance .
But collection alone then that's a different matter :D .
