IV before my recent surgery,, Didn't feel a thing.. unless its an emergancy, this is the only way to go IMO.

the shot in the gums is killer! after that its really intense, kind of cool even.. you dont feel pain, just pressure and your teeth sliding out. the little guy who removed mine (4 teeth that day) turned into a beast, put me in a headlock, and did work! after it was over i shook his hand and told him it it was awesome, he said hed never gotten that reaction before. the worst part comes when the numbing wears off.. be sure to take the pain killers with time to spare or it will feel like your jaw is seizing up.

They numbed me with shots and took out all 4 teeth. The doctor started screwing around with me and said to let him know when I was ready to extract the first tooth. After a few deep breaths I told him I was ready and he laughed and said, "Ha! Did it already."


It is post procedure that you need to be scared about. The pain was terrible but I never took my pain meds anyways so I can't complain.

I also have a phobia of needles, but it's not the needle that bothers me, it is the concept of sitting still while some SOB sticks the bloody thing in me. I hear in anthropological circles this is also known as "survival instinct"

Don't worry, the worrying always makes it seem worse. You won't remember what that little needle prick felt like when you can't chew solid food for a week anyway.

Just for reference, us "real men" let those stupid teeth rot out in our heads. My first crumbled and fell out of my mouth right around the time my son was born. In those 5 years I have ground all the points off of my teeth while I sleep. Anxiety, anyone? :D

BTW, the IV is nothing compared to the hand-injections in my experience. I have 0 fear of IVs as I have sustained thousands of injuries to my arms that were far worse than a little butterfly needle poking me, but those blasted big needles full of novacain hurt so much I'm tempted to tell the doc to just skip the bloody injection and sow that oozing gash up fer chrissake!

I had all four of mine removed, if they offer nitrous you can get a little sniff to loosen you up, great stuff!

I'm a passer-outer. It's not the pain (it really doesn't hurt) - I don't know what it is. The last time I went, the dentist didn't give me the drug that speeds up the anasthetic or whatever, and I felt fine. I think that stuff is what brought me over the edge and pass out previously. Plus a little gas to relax (I really didn't feel any different, though). Just get it over with - that's how I get through. If I pass out - oh well - git 'er done. I'm not ashamed. I just tell them, "well, I'm passing out", wkae up and they get on with it. Funny how, after the pass out, nothing bothers me. The yanking and breaking of the teeth they're pulling - whatever. I'm ok with needles, but I'm not a big fan of dentists...At All :mad: . I can say I have a high tolerance for pain, but Mouth Pain is a Whole Different Type of Pain. I'd rather get kicked in the groin :eek: :eek:!!!

I guess I have it too. It's definitely not the pain that's bothering me, but I get really queasy when I think of the poking into and under my skin and into my vein. It's like a cold queasy kind of fear. Hopefully they'll give me enough gas to get me relaxed or something. On a side note, would valium help?

after cancer surgery last year they had me on morphine or something-made me throw up constantly -
finally told the nurse if she put any more in my iv bag i would pull it out and stick it in her eye -
then 20 people came by to talk me out of going cold turkey-all wanted me to take that crap-

i said if i have some pain ill take some asprin-they got the hint and left me alone-

as for dentists- i had a tooth pulled minus Novocain when i was a kid -i hate them to the core

I had the same reaction to morphine. I then was given synthetic morphine and I didn't react badly at all.

Yup exactly the same have snapped teeth whilst grinding them asleep what's synthetic morphine / tramadol ?

Some folks refer to Demerol as synthetic morphine.

they gave me some antipuke medicine that just made things worse-

my moms liquid jello worked 1 million times better for the upset stomach-

When I tore my hand up the ER hooked my up to a morphine IV and I basically lost it when they told me what was in the IV. I immediately had them take the morphine bag off and told them "I Don't Want That In Me"!!! They replaced it, but not sure what they replaced it with??? I've had so many friends get addicted to pain meds after surgeries ... it scares me :eek: :eek:!!! Beside, almost all pain meds I take have a very weird affect on me :rolleyes: . Too embarrassing to mention :o . Take Good Care and Be Safe Always.

I appreciate that I have been on strong pain meds for years following an accident , the other option is become so intolerable due to grouchiness .
The synthetic medications I have found to be worse eg Tramadaol was marketed as an non opiate strong pain killer a substitute and less addictive alternative to morphine/codeine .
It seems though that not enough research was done as its turned out to be more addictive as working on the opiate receptors without actually being an opiate causes serotonin imbalance , this means as soon as you stop taking it not only are you in pain but you feel terribly low.
I have read that heroin addicts have stated the synthetic stuff is worse to come off than real opiates everybody is different though .
Has the op had this done yet ? How'd it go.

Valium would help relax you although I know of some people whom have been given Valium to calm them in situations they knew would stress them , they had a strong reaction with really out of character behaviour .
Although if you've had it before you'll know if you're ok.
I take 10mg of mogaddon/nitratrazepam as a sleep aid and muscle relaxant every night and it does relax the nerves.

I don't care about the IV but I HATE having work done in my mouth. I don't know if it will help you buy my solution would be to get so durnk my friends would have to carry me and put me in the chair. :) Doubt the dentist would care for that though.

Never had valium before, so I'm not sure how well it'll calm me down. I haven't really been on any drugs for pain or anxiety before, just aspirin and other more commonplace medicines. I just realized I haven't posted when the surgery is. Ironically, it's this friday, 12/21/12. End of the world for my wisdom teeth. :D

Just reschedule for Saturday...you may not have to worry about it.

I got a gum shot yesterday afternoon at teh dentist for some crown work. It isn't
that bad and it is only a few seconds anyway. Look away and think of something
else. Concentrate on the young female dental assistant. (If my wife is reading this,
I am just kidding. I don't look :cool: ,but some of the single guys might )

Well, it's tomorrow. Wish me luck. I'm just gonna be carrying a small serrated ladybug. Fingers crossed !
