When is the Carbon Fiber Chaparral with CTS XHP going to be available?
Bump for this...I'm wondering as well.tvhaugen wrote:When is the Carbon Fiber Chaparral with CTS XHP going to be available?
I think the official release date is "later". :)1623 wrote:Bump for this...I'm wondering as well.
I'd assume that, unless the factory in Taichung has a stockpile of S30V blades on hand, the next batch of CF Chaparrals will be XHP. Depending on what Spyderco themselves had on hand in Golden, that batch may have already shipped, may not ship for a year, or ship anytime between now and then. I suspect that knowledgeable dealers will probably elect to sell out of their current stock of S30V Chaparrals before reordering and that less knowledgeable dealers will ship whatever they pull off the shelf. I'd also guess that the SKU number will remain the same, so the only way for them to tell without opening the box will be the date code. To me, that means that, depending on their level of commitment to FIFO stock rotation, some could be shipping S30V Chaparrals occasionally for a few years. As for the steels, I expect that, like every other change, some will be overjoyed, some will lament, and some won't notice.jackknifeh wrote:I think the official release date is "later". :)
I wonder what the resellers will do with the S30V Chaparrals they have? Will they try to get rid of them even after they get some XHP models and not advertise the XHP? I doubt it. I'm sure they will sell whatever they can get their hands on. :D Maybe the S30V knives will be available for a little less than the "now" prices (Howe's is good at that :) ). Will the XHP be higher based on the steel? Maybe lower??? I've wondered that.

Wow, I hadn't thought about ordering a Chaparral and not knowing what blade I was getting. Granted, 5 or 6 years ago I wouldn't have cared or maybe noticed. But having the S30V I don't need another one. I have thought about getting the XHP blade at some point though. I suppose every one who does care needs to specify it to the site they order from. I think the sites most of the people here order from will automatically know of this issue and definately would take the time to make sure the customer gets what he/she orders. Some sites have a picture of a plain edge when the description says serrated. I have ordered the wrong edge before because I didn't notice. It would be easy to make the same mistake with the blade steel, especiall if the price is the same. I assume the resellers will have the knives listed seperately like they do with VG-10 or ZDP blades on the same knife. But, the price of VG-10 and ZDP would be a clue you may not be ordering the one you want. In the Chaparral's case the handle will be the same unlike the FRN knives which is another clue. :)The Deacon wrote:I'd assume that, unless the factory in Taichung has a stockpile of S30V blades on hand, the next batch of CF Chaparrals will be XHP. I don't think so Paul. Transitions can be painful but for me, the change to XHP is worth it. I guess we'll see.The Deacon wrote:I'm beginning to wonder if Spyderco is making the right move by changing the steel on the CF Chaparral. While it will simplify things for the maker, given the sh**storm CF laminate evoked, I'm afraid this change may unleash similar cries of foul from those who have a need to feel they've been victimized by someone.
You are right. I'm beginning to feel victimized already. :) I like the way you phrased it "those who have a need". Seems like it's the same folks that feel cheated no matter what. Almost like they enjoy it.The Deacon wrote:I'm beginning to wonder if Spyderco is making the right move by changing the steel on the CF Chaparral. Sal, if you can find a way to slap a wire clip on a lightweight Native 5, add some CTS XHP (or any other high-end American steel) and keep it FFG, then you count on a purchase (let's be real, more like 2 :p ) from me.sal wrote:Hi Bh49,
We have many combinations planned for the Native5. We'd like to wait until the lightweight mold is finished to make them more affordable. Some will be coming our with the G-10 version.

Hard to say. The only "knifeconnection" my search brought up led to a site that doesn't seem to carry any Spyderco knives and a search for "Chaparral" from the site was fruitless as well.ZL1 wrote:The CTS-XHP Chaps are out?

Sorry, not "knifeconnection", but rather an e-bay seller by the name of "yourknifeconnection". His ad also listed the Chaparral as having S30V steel, so it was a surprise to him to. It's beautiful. Needs more handle in the picture though - don't hide that lovely CF :DRaymond3 wrote: Picture of the Chaparral CTX-XHP in the wild. Just delivered.
