Even though the concept of a friction folder is something is new to me, I did kind of like the design. I'd love to try one out to see how it really differs from the slipits in real world usage.
I would have posted pics of the Spyderco Filip De Leeuw concept model, but it was still a concept model and not a production prototype.

Really beautiful looking but I just don't use slipjoints or any other non-lockers.

I like friction folders and Filip's Deviant FFs are very highly regarded in European knife circles, so I really hope this knife makes it into production. I'm certain it will be an instabuy for me.

It looks interesting to me, but I am not sure if I would buy one or not.

That would probably explain why there hasn't been much mention of it; it's still some time out.
Thank you for your input Wouter.

Whats to like? It certainly wont be the price.. Maybe if you had to have a stainless, nice looking FF? I can see the attraction for someone bound by law but even then its not what I'd pick..
If you want to play with a friction folder go buy a peasant knife for $15?

Come on... if everybody would think like that there wouldn't be any knife collectors... everybody would be carrying an $10 knife...
For sure, if Spyderco ever brings this model on the market, I'll be first in line to get one. First of all, because Filip, the designer, is a friend of mine. Second of all because I like the model, and I have some custom versions of the framelock version of this model.
As for the guys who say they have no need for friction folders... well, I wish we in Europe could also say "we don't need it". Unfortunately, our laws are what they are, and we have to be inventive! I'm looking a lot at friction folders and slipjoints lately.
Kind regards,
Jos

It looks lovely to me (I've always loved Deviant's styling) and I'd certainly get one if the price isn't too high (so far that's the only reason I haven't bought one of his blades), just for some EDC variation, but I do prefer normal slipits for practicality.
The only disadvantage of Friction Folders to me is the long tang extension, which helps you hold the knife open but also which sticks out quite far when closed. This means that they are not very pocket-friendly and they can dig you in the belly if you clip them to your belt or pocket.
you are right

Not for me. Is Deviant paying royalties to Spyderco for the hole, or is it not required in this situation/any situation? I figured that's why I didn't see more knives with them.
Looks like that long tang wound get in my way, but then again I'm used to carrying my knives in pockets and not sheaths unless I'm using my RAT/BRKT fixed blades.
I'd like to hear some more reports on it though!

Don't know about royalties (and it's not my business anyway), but Filip (Deviant) is using the Spyderhole WITH permission from Spyderco!
Kind regards,
Jos

I have a natural g10 flat ground curly tip, fit and finish wasnt very nice, the screws inparticular looks like they came from another knife, the threaded part of the screws stick out of the female inserts alot, the knife also shipped in a old mircotech box... but the blades nice, handle slabs and back spacer are same marital, but based on this I wasnt a return customer.

That, is not what I meant. If there are already makers such as your friend flip, producing them at a custom level, then there are high value/quality FF already available. There are also plenty of dirt cheap friction folders on the market for anyone curious to try one out. I just can't see the gap in the market where this fits? But then again I wouldn't buy anything that didn't lock up so I wouldn't really know what goes through the mind of a FF consumer :p

Really?
Only production friction folder I readily know is the Svord, all others I know are customs.
In Europe knife laws are severe and I only see them becoming stricter in the near future.
A few years and a whole marked can only use slipjoints and friction folders.
These have the right to be informed of the existence of (and get access to) a decent legal knife
The spyderco prototype is a very nice modern interpretation of a friction folder.
I have two svord pheasants and four custom friction folders, not much if you know I have over 200 knives.
I had the opportunity to handle the spyderco prototype when I was getting some custom knives from Filip at his house.
There is no way you can compare it to the svord, it's an exceptional piece

I also like friction folders. This type of friction folder is called here "couteau piƩmontais" (Piemont is a region of Italy) and from what I have read it seems to be a very old type of folder (found in archaeological excavations of Roman camps).

Are there any further informations about the production knife ? Blade steel, handle material, final size, etc ?

They are made buy Moki so I would think its VG-10 steel to keep it affordable. Sal said they where keeping the with mozaik pins and G-10 handle.

OK thank you. A friction folder is a very simple construction = less expensive to manufacture. VG-10 is nice but a better steel would have been great.

Is this confirmed?
This is one Spyderco I'm looking forward to! Legal carry, and designed by my friend Filip De Leeuw!
Kind regards,
Jos
